^^^Completely different era. That movie came out over 10 years ago. Back then they had a whole crop of 'domestic' black actors to choose from and they had budgets to regularly fly back and forth between Japan and America. I think most of the talent of that era aged out, retired, moved on, lost...

I suspect it was a money thing. To shoot in America, you have to fly the whole cast and crew to L.A. and provide hotel and accommodations. Way easier and cheaper to shoot with local black guys in Japan.
