Plot: In 19th-century China, seven year old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong - or "old sames" - bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan.
In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong's descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever.
现代故事中，女主角索菲娅（全智贤 饰）与尼娜（李冰冰 饰）是要好的朋友，经常在一起玩耍、学习。一次偶然机会，苏菲从姑姑口中听到一个故事：“很久以前在乡下，年轻的同龄女孩会彼此发誓成为老同。这是女人间最亲密的关系，甚至超越夫妻、姐妹。彼此沟通是靠写在扇面上的一种秘密语言，这就是女书。” 相知又相惜的索菲娅与尼娜在姑姑的主持下结为老同，发誓彼此为对方一生最衷心的伙伴。
时光回退到1800年中期的湖南小镇，这里生活着两个清秀可人的小女孩，百合（李冰冰 饰）与雪花（全智贤 饰）。俩人在幼年时结为老同，用女书互诉真情。随年龄增长，两人相继嫁夫生子。原本贫苦的百合因外貌出众和有一双完美的小脚，嫁入富家；而生于富家的雪花却因为父亲吸鸦片而家道中落，下嫁给乡间屠夫（姜武 饰）。百合夫家父母双亡，她顺理成章成为当地最有权势的村长夫人；雪花却在艰苦的生活中挣扎，还要承受丧子之痛。为了照顾雪花，百合恳请她搬离屠夫家与自己同住。雪花爱夫心切，拒绝了百合的好意。百合意识到她们的友情已有隔阂，不再是幼时纯洁的友谊，她心生愤怒，拒绝再与雪花往来。
