Based on the famous Gu Long wuxia novel, martial arts drama Butterfly Sword won wide acclaim during its run on CCTV, and its audience ratings even surpassed that of Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. There have been a few movie and TV adaptations of the novel already, including the 1976 Shaw Brothers classic, and the 1993 film starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai. Helmed by veteran director Raymond Lee (Swordsman), the latest screen incarnation stars Taiwan actor Victor Huang, Black & White actress Ivy Chen, Because of You heartthrob Baron Chen, Golden Bell Best Actor Liu De Kai, Mainland actress Wang Yan, and Hong Kong actor Anthony Lau.
"Old Man" Sun Yubo (Liu De Kai) and Wan Pengwang (Anthony Lau) are the leaders of the two biggest clans in the martial world. Plotting to rule the martial world, Gao Jiping (Wang Yan), the treacherous boss of the assassin organization "Pleasure Woods" provokes the rivalry between the two clans, and incites Old Man's right-hand-man Lu Xiangchuan (Victor Huang) to double-cross him. At the same time, Gao also sends her four most feared assassins to kill Old Man.
