Plot:
With an arresting mix of eroticism and horror, Oshima plunges the viewer into a nightmarish tale of guilt and retribution in Empire of Passion (Ai no borei), a follow up to his infamous 1976 film In the Realm of the Senses. Based on a novel by Itoko Namura and set in a Japanese village at the end of the nineteenth century, the film details the emotional and physical downfall of a married woman and her younger lover following their decision to murder her husband and dump his body in a well. Empire of Passion was Oshima’s only true kaidan (Japanese ghost story), and the film, a savage, unrelenting experience, earned him the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Seki (Kazuko Yoshiyuki) and Toyoji (Tatsuya Fuji) are having an illicit love affair, but during their playfulness they decide to kill her husband and pretend that he has just vanished while looking for work away from home. Once Gisaburo (Takahiro Tamura) has been murdered, his body is disposed of down a well and the story of him seeking work away from home is created and passed on through out the village. With this desperate act their problems are far from solved. Three years later Gisaburo returns, but not as the man he once was, he is a ghost, a sad and lonely lost soul who stumbles around the place he once lived. This is not the perfect setting for his murderers and drives them into bouts of increasing grief and despair, or could this visitation be a hallucination derived from their overbearing guilt? As ghost appears to others in the village, gossip spreads to all corners and very shortly Inspector Hotta (Takuzo Kawatani) comes calling.
Empire of Passion is a remarkably well written and directed film by Nagisa Ôshima, who develops the simple story into something much more complex and involving as the film progresses and, with remarkable performances by Tatsuya Fuji, Kazuko Yoshiyuki and, appearing mostly as a ghost, Takashiro Tamara. Somehow, Ôshima manages to make a film with elements of drama, romance and horror without it ever feeling clunky, with the narrative naturally moving from a romantic drama to a ghost story and the character arcs progress accordingly, so you never feel as if someone is acting unreasonably or in the way which doesn't fit in with the narrative.
