went to japan for a week and only used up 3000usd excluding accommodation and airfare.

What exactly are you looking to do? It really makes a big difference, especially if you aren't going out of Tokyo. Bring as much as you can either way.
Well he did say "maximize Japan experience" - that would include the following:
*Touring around. Gunna cost a LOT of cash just to get around if he's serious about going from place to place. Even more if he doesn't know what he's doing and gets a taxi
*Buying souveniers: Oh man. talk about money money money
*Eating out: That's Unagi (eel) season so be prepared to spend (if you go to a GOOD place) about 2,500 yen for a meal. That alone will be 17,500 yen right there for nice evening dinners. More if he goes to try something unique like fugu (look at 12,000 per dinner per person - just had that experience while taking 9 clients out for Fugu in Asakusa... fuck me...)
*Entrance costs for museums: Pocky museum, Ramen museum, Salt museum, Pachinko museum, Gundam museum, etc etc etc. Each costs between 700 and 1,500 yen.
*Snacks throughout the day + liquids so he doesn't keep over: Tack on another minimum 1,500 per day just to keep you hydrated.
*Shopping: Not souvenirs, just cool shit for yourself. Japanese electronics and gadgets, sex sleeves (Onna-holes) if you're a single guy and desperate, DVD's, manga, etc.
*Money for liquor if you like to go out and party it up: Tack on 8 to 10,000 yen per 'outing'.
*Cash for Maid Cafe's if he's going to try it: Entrance into most in Tokyo is roughly 2,500 yen ontop of the price of your drinks and food. I suggest my buddies establishment in Akihabara called 'Friendly Fire'. Walk straight North on the West-entrance of Yodobashi Camera, it's about 2.5 blocks up and on the right. 3rd floor (up a huge horrible stairway)
*13,000 or so if he wants to see some porn-stars dancing in Asakusa (Maria Ozawa, Yuko Kazuki, Yummi Ichikawa, Victoria or 'Vicky' Slavik). Even more if you want a lap-dance.
So... that's a general idea. It's not mentioning the hotel/hostel cost either or anything else you might need cash for. If you wear glasses, you can pick up some awesome specs for 7000 yen. Super cheap compared to Canada anyhow.

What I mean with maximize is experiencing things that could only happen in Japan. All sorts of ONLY IN JAPAN

Money goes fast in Japan. You can spend so much cash doing absolutely nothing without even noticing it, mainly through transportation.
just use subways, JR trains and buses only. ask the airport for unlimited passes or day passes. forget the taxis
japanese people are very helpful even if some cant speak english. one time, a non-english speaking jap accompanied me to my destination so I wont get lost.

If you are tight on budget and you don't really care where to sleep, you should check manga kissa : ~2000Y per night, 12H stay only starting from 7pm, don't forget to check out and don't stay longer than you plan too : +80Y per 10 minutes !!!

Yoshinoya is a cheap place where you can eat (rice bowl ~600Y).
Therefore you can stay alive with about 50 000 Y per week, but i wouldn't recommand you to stay with less money than that.

Yea, that's 'surviving' and what Biv described is a lot like how homeless people sometimes live. Also, most manga/internet cafe's won't charge you for a shower but you will need to bring your own soap.

Ramen shacks can charge between ¥500 & ¥1,100 depending on how many items you add to your noodles. A pint of craftbeer will cost between ¥800-¥1,200. (Standard Japanese megabrews will run about 67% of that.) If you opt for pay-as-you-ride train tickets, figure up to ¥1,200 per day for that. There are interesting neighborhoods in Tokyo which are not near a JR line. Do not become a slave to your JR pass. :sadomaso

You will find chain restaurants such as McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, and even Shakey's Pizza. There are also Japanese quick service shops MOS Burger, Freshness Burger, First Kitchen, Lotteria, & Kua’Aina (which has craftbeer from Kona Brwg. of Hawaii, U.S.A.). You can get a combination meal from them for ¥500-¥950. Bowls of beef with rice are served at Sukiya, Yoshinoya, Matsuya, and Tokyo Chikara Meshi stands for around ¥490.
Try to change your money at Daikokuya. Avoid exchanging at Travelex - it has the lowest rate.
Stay in Yokohama at Guest House Kanalian. It is within walking distance from the downtown Yokohama train station, and costs ¥13,000 / week. (Bring pajamas. :surprised: A towel is optional. :relax-bath
