Do you know of JAVs that are A Notch Above in execution? Ones with extra punch, a dab more brilliance? The kind that Stand Out in a Crowd, as it were? Well, why have you been keeping them to yourself, for heaven's sake? Hopefully, you will now enlighten the rest of us.
Something I've griped about, and I've seen others echo the same, is when a JAV series follows the formula with an exactitude that makes you question the filmmakers' aptitude. Don't they have the imagination to try new tricks? See, that's the kind of an example which may qualify as a contender, here; a JAV that makes the effort to go beyond the usual same-old.
Let me give you an example. Are you familiar with the ATTACKERS series? Great production values, usually, but sometimes I get the feeling one ATTACKERS movie can run right into the other; it's like you can substitute one for another, and no one will know the difference.
A few months ago, I wrote what follows:
While I've got you, I'd like to add a thought that applies to the damsel-in-distress movies. I've noticed a new twist to some of the movies of this mold (especially refreshing, because one weak point about JAV is that they usually follow the exact same formula with a series idea... sometimes scene-by-scene. It's very frustrating when they rarely add any kind of a twist, as if they are convinced what they have come up with is so perfect). It's this:
Once the breakthrough has been made with the victim, we now sometimes get a series of very brief vignettes, showing the villain having sex with the victim in different settings... giving the idea that the victim has been hopelessly ensnared even deeper. Whomever came up with that idea got to the heart of the matter, and I wish they would have come up with it sooner. (Naturally, this is also one idea now being used over and over, in faithful formula repetition, but it happens to be one I hope they will keep using.)
With that last line, I didn't mean to give the idea that I've been seeing this wonderful approach all over the place. I've only been seeing it here and there.
Well, I just saw the same schtick again in:
Tax Accountant Who Got Banged By a Shop Owner [RBD-612], with Sarina Takeuchi
I thought the movie was above average, and beautifully cast with the stylish star. Then I started thinking about the movie that inspired my words that I've quoted above, Obedient Careerwoman [RBD-679], with Rin Ogawa. There was a very similar style... even the villain, played by Scraggly, pictured above, was the same.)
I then got the idea... could both movies have been directed by the same artist? (I may be slow on the uptake, but eventually, I get there.) Indeed they were.
The director's name is Tkuo Otani (translated from 大谷卓生 as Takuo Otani), and it looks like he got his start in 2008.
I see he has done a lot of "SPRD" movies in the beginning of his career, but I'm interested in his ATTACKERS ones, in force since 2013. If you would like to look into similar works, I've provided a list below. (And the reason why it may be all the way down below is because this is the first time I've tried to create a table in BB code, and for some reason it decided to go way down there.)
I like the different settings they have thought up, too; for example, there is one with a "Cosmetics Advisor" with Serina Hayakawa [RBD-721], and one with an "Accountant" with Ichika Kanhata [RBD-717]... as well as one for a "Pool Hustler" with Kaori [SHKD-623]. (And what about "Wife of a Movie Director Who Lost His Distributors" [RBD-623], with Kaho Kasumi? Have you ever heard of that setting as a premise?) Yep, it seems to me that these movies by Mr. Otani have attempted to travel the extra mile.
(By the way, I ran into an interesting site called "movie-ga.com" while seeing what was out there, regarding this director. Here's the English translation of a page where a good many of his movies are reviewed. The review for the Tax Accountant one [RBD-612] that caught my attention states that it was "the best" "among the works that I saw in 2014.")
Director Tkuo Otani's later output.
(Sorry this table had a mind of its own,
and decided to plant itself down here.)
