While I do appreciate people posting new stuff , there's so many things wrong with that file above that it really pains me to see how little people care nowadays in the idol section.
- It wasn't properly deinterlaced. You can see obvious signs of interlacing all over the video, especially noticeable during movement.
I don't think the arm of an idol should look like it has big straight hair on its side:
(3x zoom)
- The aspect ratio is slightly wrong. It should be 16:9 but it's set to 20:11 for some reason so instead of being displayed at 853x480, it's being displayed at 873x480.
- The quality is fairly low. With how good computers are nowadays, there's really no excuses for using fast low quality presets when encoding DVDs. The "slow" x264 preset produces a very good speed to quality ratio and we don't end up with a blurry mess. Took me only 37 minutes to encode this one with x264 "very slow" preset and a demanding deinterlacer.
- The extra behind the scene stuff is at the beginning of the video instead of at the end and the ad was left in. That one is a bit understandable since that's how that DVD is structured, but most software can do cuts even if they can't rearrange the order of the video. It just shows little care and diminishes the user experience.
- There are no chapters. Not a big issue but it's nice to have and many software can even do this automatically.
- The audio is tagged as english instead of japanese so if someone makes subtitles for it, it can mess up the logic for loading them depending on how it's set. Minor issue but can be annoying.
Now for a few comparison screenshots to illustrate my point.
The mp4 rebirth0322 shared(1.12GB):
The Original DVD with only my player basic deinterlacer(3.39GB):
My own quality rip with x265(832MB):
My own low quality(although I have a hard time calling it that after seeing the previous post rip) rip with x265(261MB):
And for those familiar with my old 10 bit encodes, the previous quality I was using, x264(950MB):
The good thing about the previous post is that it made me realize I never posted this video before so I will rectify that once it's done uploading in a couple of hours.
I didn't make this post to be mean, I made it to try and encourage people to care a little more. It might even not be rebirth0322 fault if they didn't encode it themselves, but found it somewhere else and simply wanted to share it here which is always a good thing, regardless of the quality.
But for those who do encode things in that level of quality, you should really try to make a little more effort since it doesn't take much to drastically increase quality and the enjoyment of anyone who will download your releases. If the problem is that you don't have the technical knowledge to reencode a video properly, the forum has a
Tech Support section where you can ask those kind of question and there are a few members who are more than willing to help with those problems, myself included.
