VLC not playing JAV DVDs

Anyone know how to get around certain JAV videos not playing in VLC?
All dvd's, which have the following written on the disc label cannot play

型番SCPH-50000以前のPS2では再生できない場合があります。

Probably a Region thing? Are they true Region 2 DVDs? You can always use DVDShrink or MakeMKV to see if you can get working digital copies of the VOB assets to play in VLC
