My theory is that actresses from the past were signed with big studios, so they were easier to find for the average JAV fan. Now, big studios (except Moodyz maybe) tend to rely almost exclusively on looks. Some girls might have skills but the studios also don't make movies where they could show them. When you take a look at S1 movies, most of them are just 2 or 3 guys fucking the girl, no story, nothing. Not easy for a girl to shine if she has to be passive. While if a girl is freelance, she can choose what kind of movies she wants to do.
