I used to have a favorite, now I juat don't know. The more I watch the more I like. Darker than Black comes to mind but I have watched like 500 episodes of the Naruto series and 366 episodes of Bleach (not counting the movies which I enjoyed as well). I am crazy about the Ikki Tousen series and just a fan of the genre in general. Call me otaku or even weeboo if you must but regular television is just so....boring and predictable (not to mention we are currently between seasons). Space Dandy was very good though, I can see why you liked it.
I liked Another, had a good story, loved the plot twists. I haven't seen Hurrycane Polymar let alone the OVAs nor Saint Seiya.

Given how popular Bleach has been it's pretty much certain that they're gonna make a 2nd series or some sort of OVA series to tie things up once the manga ends(and I have a hard time seeing how they're gonna be able to make a new arc after this one) which is probably going to be soon.
I loved GitS:SAC as well but I have to say I shudder at the thought of somebody making it into a western Live Action, when has that ever turned out well
I am fairly sure a 17th season of Bleach is confirmed with all the original voice actors already signed up for it, both Japanese and English. I had been reading about it while I was still watching the 16th season, let me see if I can find a link.....

Naruto is probably the first anime i watched that was in Japanese so i am still sticking with it. Sometimes hating the fillers 
Out of the current ones that i am watching i like parasyte and cross ange the most but i am continuously watching new anime so it is really hard to tell

watched Legend of Sanctuary yesterday, and it's ok imho.
they changed a lot of things, but that was expected as they had to fit the whole first chapter in a 90 minutes OVA.
some explanations about stuff are given, mainly by apparently random remarks made here and there, but strangely the whole 'cosmo' business was better explained in 2 minutes in one of the old earlier episodes.
no deep introspections, no long battles; in short, nothing.
Shun is still gay and useless, but it's barely noticeable here.

I kind of doubt that Space Dandy will return, sadly enough. There was a lot of collaboration that went into that series, with different directors, writers and artists. That kind of effort couldn't have been easy.
I think the anime whose name you were searching for is Space Battleship Yamato. It is actually from the '70s but different and newer versions have popped up (the lastest just finished airing I believe). I haven't seen any of them myself.

Yes, that's it. I think that was the first japanime I saw. Good'ol Saturday cartoons! Thanks Ceewan for finding the title, I had completely forgot it.
No worries. I recognized the description and I think I saw it myself when I was younger. Can't stand American 'toons much anymore. Oh, Disney still puts out some killer animated movies but American animation is just so politically correct it makes me want to puke. Mind you I still watch The Simpsons and South Park so there is some decent prime time stuff (actually, that is all the non-Japanese animated tv I watch, the rest I haven't liked).
When I was younger getting up early on Saturdays and hanging with my peeps watching morning toons and smoking a few bowls was a killer way to start the weekend after a long hard week at work. So I got some good memories of Saturday cartoons myself, (Samurai Jack, Batman, and Superman were all well done stuff) and I know where you are coming from. But try watching Queens' Blade or Death Note sometime and you might see why Japan considers anime one of its' number one exports and a national treasure. I am watching Rozen Maiden right now and where they come up with these ideas I have no idea, the original programing in anime from Japan is spectactular.
Samurai Jack was rerun in it's entirety recently on Toonami, along with Bleach. Kill la Kill seems to be fairly interesting. Some notable US toons as of late are Rick & Morty, and Squidbillies. I still enjoy the 60's Spiderman toons, though the movies don't do Spidey justice.
The last two American toons that I stopped watching were Kung Fu Panda and Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles. They are both well done but like so much on tv they are just products imitating art. Even South Park, which is conceived, written and completely produced a week before it airs.....is just a brand. While each episode is meant to entertain the show as a whole has no meaning, it just goes on and on until its' producers quit or it fails to serve its' purpose...which is to make money. Art is not about money, success is just a byproduct of artwork that is above average or better.
Like every good story most Japanese anime I have seen has a beginning, a middle and an end. The anime has a purpose and once that is fulfilled then the series is over, regardless of its' popularity. Space Dandy is a pretty good example of this. The exceptions would be those anime that are based on an ongoing manga or light novel series, in which case they are merely paying homage to them. Artwork is a finished product.
In America, the land that I love, they rarely pay actual homage to a comicbook, they just use its' name in order to change the story to their liking and make a dollar instead of being true to the original article and trusting to original storylines. Spiderman, X-men, Captain America, Batman, et cetra, et cetra. I am told that one of the reasons that the tv show The Walking Dead is a success is because they stay mostly true to the comic series it is derived from (I wouldn't know, watch the show never read the comic). But mostly, Hollywood just fucks things up. My favorite example of this is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This whole series was originally based on an independent comic series. Yet the original comic series was dark, bloody, full of expletives and just plain badass. I know, I remember reading it when it first came out (wish I still had some of those comics, they are worth a small mint today).
Another of my favorites, (posted in the torrent section), is Welcome to the NHK. Not all Japanese anime is fantasy or action based. Often they are contemporary dramas and some of them are just excellent.

Evangelion - deep, symbolic yet confusing AF storyline
Attack on Titan - can we please have season 2 already...
Initial D - I'm a car guy, so yea
Chobits - First and only anime that ever made me cry. And of course Chii is so kawaii!
Bleach - Swordplay fight scenes galore!

Anime make me cry all the time but I am an emotional guy (I cried at the end of "Saving Private Ryan"). Maybe it comes with age, maybe it has to do with knowing so much loss myself, maybe it is an empathy thing but likely it is just me being me.
Great anime that I have watched and is emotionally moving (in my personal opinion of course):

Sword Art Online (really, how can that story not move someone to the core?)

Another (I don't know if this is a truly sad anime but it is not a happy one)
Unbreakable Machine Doll (mostly a great action and comedy anime but includes some seriously deep humanity issues )
Kaze No Stigma (another good action anime)
Beck (music based fantastic story that should draw a tear from the corner of your eye)
Welcome to The NHK (one of my all-time favorites, recently rewatched it)
The Book of Bantorra
Haganai (and the sequel)
Red Data Girl
Darker Than Black
Gunslinger Girl (this is just a special anime but if you have a heart, it will tear it out)
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (this anime was made to break your heart!)
Say I Love You (all romance anime is filled with heartbreaking moments, if it is any good and this one is)
Angel Beats
Kids On The Slope (great jazz too!)
Of course not all these anime will bring you to tears but almost all anime include some heart-rending drama. Full-Metal Alchemist is a great example, just the basic plot is almost enough to tear you up. The cartoons I grew up watching and the anime that comes out of Japan are so foreign to each other as to be unrecongizable as the close cousins that they actually are. Action and fanservice are great but if you watch anime...be willing to be moved by the depth of the story. When you watch a great story you become emotionally invested and that is what enjoying great anime is all about.
