Does anyone know a movie that was made in Japan and a young girl becoming a teacher in a school and she had a brother and/or student. She ran away or the student ran away and the boy was lost roaming the streets and he was begging or stealing other peoples food. It was shown on the Sundance or IFC channel way back in 2001

I had it on VHS and now its gone :(

I never know it was Chinesze
I thought it was japanese, the part where I saw the boy hungry really made me sad I almost cried just watching that
 
Respectfully..how can one confuse a Chinese movie with a Japanese one??
Not only are the languages totally different, but the dress, and the culture is too?

I know you saw it a long time ago, so maybe things got hazy....

If you want to see a similar Japanese movie about 3 young siblings who have to take care of themselves ater their flaky mother leaves them, and how they have to keep their plight a secret so they won't get taken away by the authorities and separated...see the award winning film,

"Nobody Knows!" Dare mo shiranai (2004)

It's out on dvd, and I am sure there is a torrent of it somewhere...
 
Nobody Knows is a good one too, as is All About Lily Chou-Chou that Ceewan mentioned.

Unlike Not One Less, both of those films will leave you with a cold, empty feeling inside, though.

I like those tragic films.
 
You guys should see. "Owl and The Sparrow" from Vietnam, its very good.
