S-S-Satellites SDK-01 The Duel
Here is another release from my favorite Japanese production company Super Sonic Satellites. This DVD consists of three separate mixed martial arts fights that take place outdoors, with the unique premise of a winner-take-all fight to the death. Personally, the idea of a fight to the death doesn't really appeal to me but the action is not especially brutal or bloody. In fact, its pretty tame in that regard. All three fights have a good back-and-forth balance with neither fighter the clear winner until nearly the end of the match, which is what I personally prefer over a one-sided, domination style fight.
All three fights feature different combatants for a total of six different fighters. They all wear mostly different outfits. The first two fights each have one girl in plain "street" clothes and one girl in a karate or judo/jiu-jitsu style gi, and the third fight has both girls wearing "street" clothes. Sorry guys, there is no nudity in any of three fights. The girls are all pretty hot, though. A little on the skinny side for my taste but still very cute. :virtuous:
The matches are a combination of stand-up strikes (punches and kicks) and jiu-jitsu or pro-wrestling style submission holds. The action itself is nothing special. What sets this DVD apart from others of the same genre is the editing. They used many different camera angles in each match which is at times distracting but for the most part a plus. You can tell they took some time to edit the fights to try and give them a movie-like feel. There are even some slow-mo replays from time to time to showcase different punches and kicks as the fights progress. While I applaud them for the extra effort in this regard, they do fall short at times in making the action seem "believable" or well choreographed. I have certainly seen better (or at least more believable) fights from SSS and other production companies in the past, so temper your expectations. They won't be winning any best action sequence awards for this one.
I got kind of lazy when I when I encoded the raw files into my standard H264 codec. I created the files in a 320x240 format to decrease file size but it unfortunately caused some pixelation and blur (though not enough to make them unwatchable by any means). Don't let that stop you from downloading the files, however, because basically they are the same quality that you would get from a DRM stream from the Zen or Giga websites. Also, because I didn't play close attention to the aspect ratio, you can see small black bars to the left and right of the video. But again not enough to cause too much of a problem. Hey, nobody's perfect. :exhausted:
All downloads are "stand-alone" files that will play separately, so you can pick and choose which fights to download and watch. I edited the files so each download begins at the start of one of the three fights and ends when the fight ends. I'm still looking for a good file sharing website that can propagate files onto multiple sites simultaneously. If you have any suggestions for a new site I can use let me know. In the meantime, I uploaded the files onto rapidshare and megaupload. If you are unable to download from either of those sites, let me know and I will upload to your site of choice on a first-come-first-serve basis (when I have the time).
My ratings:
Production value (Direction, Action, Enthusiasm): C+
Presentation (Attractiveness of the girls, Attire, Setting): B+
Tilt (My overall opinion): B-
