Naw, I don't like Jon Jones either. Saint Preux actually broke his arm in the 2nd round and still fought till the end. He was a good matchup for Jones who is used to towering over his opponents with his 84.5" reach. I don't know why Anthony Johnson has not been pitted against Jones yet but I don't think he wanted this fight on short notice, although the reason given for him turning down this oppurtunity was he was recovering from surgery. Problem with Johnson is his durability, he is another very big 205 pounder and tends to gas out, like when he fought for the title against Cormier. He hits super hard though and he stands a decent chance against Jones but he only has a 78" reach (that gives Jones a 6.5 inch reach advantage) and is a big framed 6'2". There are some up-and-comers who might match up well but they are all out of the top ten.
I'm hoping that gassing out during the Cormier fight was just related to nerves. He's shot to the top pretty quickly since coming back at 205, might have psyched himself out.
I never thought Rumble would've taken out Gustafson like he did, so I'd still bet on him against Jones. I'll never understand why he did all that time at 170 when he was obviously able to stand on his own at LHW or even HW.
Didn't get the "Alert" for your post so I missed it, sry. I would have picked Rumble over Gustafson. Gustafson is a good fighter but he has a problem with power hitters. Cormier is a great wrestler and they tend to dominate hitters or get knocked out by them and Cormier has a great chin. He had a fantastic brawl with Gustafson by the way, just to prove to himself he could handle the reach, I think. Can't wait to see him fight Jones again. In my opinion Rumble is too small for the current heavyweight class in the UFC, which is 35 to 55 pounds heavier than the LHW division. I think he could fight very well at a 225 lb. division but the UFC doesn't have one. Jones tested at making his comeback in the Heavyweight division by-the-by, and he gave that pipe dream up pretty quick.
Invicta FC 17 is on tonight and I can't wait. There are some real bruisers on the card and not so many cuties but I can live with that. The co-main event should be great, unless your Angela Hill (who looked extra hot at weigh-ins, like always). Souza is taking this fight a bit personal and gave Hill the finger at weigh-ins, almost sticking it up Hills nose, which of course didn't sit well with Hill. I think Hill is outclassed here but we will find out if she learned enough in her time at UFC to take home the INVICTA strawweight belt. Look for Evinger to win as well, she is a veteran who has come into her own and has faced some of the best womens bantamweights in the world (not saying she has beaten the best but she damn sure fought many of them).

INVICYA FC 17 is in the books now and it contained a few surprises. The main event was the least exciting fight with Evinger getting the expected win over the game Schnieder. The biggest surprise was after the fight when Evinger kissed the female announcer on the mouth after the interview. A bit of a surprise to the announcer (who is married but certainly kissable) adding to the fact the Champion Evinger had just vomited into a bucket moments earlier. All in good fun though.
Angela Hill shocked me by earning the Invicta strawweight belt over a previously 9-0 Souza (that is three fights more than Hill has had professionally and twice as many as Hill had won) in a split decision win. I am not sure how the judges scored it so close, even I had Hill up by three rounds and the first two rounds were close despite the fact Hill spent most of the time on her back. Angela danced around for five rounds and outpunched Souza who scored her fair share of blows on Hill but could not put her away or outscore her. Congrats Angela Hill!

The knockout of the night goes to Charmaine Tweet who was getting her ass kicked by Latoya Walker but not only did she hang in there and strike back but she landed a beautiful spinning backfist (best I ever saw) and knocked latoya off her feet. Tweet followed her to the ground and started to land bombs but Herb Dean called the fight.

The other fights were a joy to watch as well. Loved every one of them.

UFC Fight night 87 was pretty good, not great but not bad. Most of the fights were fairly electric but a few looked like warm-up fights to keep the better fighters busy and paid while they await bigger venues. The UFC does that kind of thing.
The two womens bouts were (yeah, that is my main interest here but I watch the guys fight too):
Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs Heather Jo Clark which at least interesting though Karolina seemed pretty confident. For good reason though, she is not only a cutey but a contender here and beat poor Heather Jo down for three rounds. Clark was on TUF season 20 and even though she hadn't fought in awhile she brings respectable skills to the cage. Some one-sided photos of the fight (which was pretty one0sided, Clark can take a punch though), Karolina is the one connecting:
The Main Card had Germaine de Randamie, a renouned striker in a tune-up fight with poor newcomer Anna Elmose. I hope she got paid to get her ass beat like that, she never stood a chance. They had wanted Germaine to fight against Cyborg but she wanted her first fight in the UFC in her hometown where her mother could come see it.

Japan got into the action in a pair of bouts and dominated both of them with Yuta Sasaki submitting the previously unbeaten Willie Gates and Kyoji Horiguchi beating up on a tough as nails Neil Seery. Both fights were in the early prelims. Other notable matches included newcomer Josh Emmett winning a split(?) decision against John Tuck despite having to finish the fight with his ring finger broken and sticking out at an awkward angle. Emmett dominated the first two rounds and was winning the third when a missed kick from Tuck caught Joshs' finger and broke it. The ref asked Emmett if he wanted to continue, which he did, and he tried to fight one-handed and run away from Tuck who tried but could not finish the one-handed fighter. I don't know what was sadder, Emmett trying to fight with one hand or the fact Tuck couldn't put him away.

The Gunnar Nelson vs. Albert Tumenov was probably the biggest fight on the night, the main event and co-main event notwithstanding. It was a real great fight too, Gunnar Nelson, who lost badly recently to Demian Maia (who has been cheated of a title fight IMO, he has beaten Woodley who is getting the title fight and is ranked ahead of him somehow), showed why he is a contender by beating the previously 14th ranked unbeaten hard htting Tumenov via submission.

I am not one for all conspiracy theories but I have mentioned my suspicions involving mob connections and the UFC. As fantastic as that sounds in this day and age I have confirmed that there are legitimate mob ties here but I do believe it is likely that the sport of mma is unpredictable enough that their involvement is mainly on the betting end. Do I sound like a madman? Well....that may be true, nonetheless see if you can follow me here:
Dana White was chased out of Boston where he was a gaining success and notoriety as a boxing trainer by Whitey Bulger who was hitting him up for a cut of the action. Money that Dana did not have. This is by Danas' own words and easily enough for anyone to confirm.
Dana returned to Vegas where he had gone to High School with his buddy and now CEO of Zuffa LLC Frank Joseph Fertitta III and together, along with brother Lorenzo Joseph Fertitta, bought the UFC for 2 million. Joseph Fertitta III also is the CEO of Station Casinos founded by his father Frank Joseph Fertitta Jr.. This is where it gets a little hairy:
Salvatore Maceo and Rosario Maceo ran The Maceo syndicate in Galvingston, Texas (look them up in the wiki) back in the 1930s' and 40s'. The Fertitta family and the Maceo family considered each other kin because of the marriage of Joseph Frances Fertitta to Sam's sister Olivia Maceo. Wikipedia lists Sal Maceos' successor as Victor J. Fertitta and Anthony Fertitta both relatives (great uncles) of our Fertitta brothers, who moved to Vegas from Galvingston. The Ferttitas' are a big family and very wealthy. There is little chance Dana had no idea of who he was getting in bed with here but hey....he still owns 9% of the UFC (in the form of Zuffa, LLC). Zuffa, by-the-by, is Italian for the word "fight".
Now you have the facts that I have. Confirm them to your content but don't deny them until you at least look into it.

UFC 198 is coming up this weekend. This is not one I am really excited about but I will definetly watch it.
The title fight in the main event is interesting. Fabricio Werdum finally defends his heavyweight title and it is against Stipe Miocic who has been knocking people out for the last ten years. I would say it is a classic striker vs grappler fight but Werdum outpunched Cain Velasquez to get the title. Werdum is the more rounded fighter and he is fighting in Brazil so he has a lot of support going into the fight. Werdum also has 4 more years of experience than Stipe so he has few obvious weaknesses here. Werdum would be the safer bet but I think I will put my money on the underdog Stipe anyway. Stipe hits harder and with heavyweights that is usually the deciding factor. 11 of Stipes 14 wins have come due to stoppage from strikes.
The main card is stacked with hardhitting contests, including the only female bout on the card: Cris Cyborg vs. Leslie Smith. I saw Leslie Smith in her last fight and she jumped at this oppurtunity to fight Cyborg when nobody else would. Leslie has trained with Cyborg before so as tough as she is I think it takes guts for her to step up and take a public beating. I wouldn't bet on that fight with your money, let alone mine. I will be cheering Smith on but I won't expect any miracles from her.
The last fight on the preliminary card has me intrigued: Matt Brown vs. Demian Maia. Matt Brown is a terror when he is healthy...which has not been very often. Demian Maia, who I think deserves a title shot, just might finally get one if he can win. Brown will be a very hard contest for him but unlike most older fighters trying to stay in the game, Maia was dominant against top competition last year (winning two by decision and one by submission). There is no way I would bet against Demian Maia, win or lose, he is at the top of his game right now.
Overall I expect the Brazillians to shine in their home country. They usually do.

Let us take a look at Frank Fertitta III and Lorenzo Fertittas' more famous cousin: Tilman J. Fertitta.
One of the richest restaurateurs of America, Tilman Joseph Fertitta is the founder and chairman of the Landry’s Restaurants. He also occupies an important position in the board of members of the University of Houston System.
His roots come from Galveston, Texas, where he was born and raised. His family had moved from Sicily to Texas. On the educational front, Fertitta went to the Texas Tech University. Further completing his graduation, he moved to University of Houston where he studied business administration and hospitality management.
The wealthy 56-year-old Texan over three decades created Landry’s Inc. His Houston-based multibillion-dollar nationwide empire includes more than 500 casual- and fine-dining venues under 40 different brands; downtown aquariums in Denver and Houston; and the Kemah Boardwalk in Galveston, Texas.
Fertitta acquired his first casinos in 2005 when Landry’s bought the Golden Nugget Las Vegas and Golden Nugget Laughlin for $325 million.
The company added a new hotel tower to the downtown property and other amenities, such as a 200,000-gallon live shark tank. The Laughlin casino also was cleaned up. Both properties received restaurants from the Landry’s collection — Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse in Las Vegas and a Salt Grass Steak in Laughlin.
Fertitta’s $1.4 billion buyout of Landry’s in 2010, in which he took private the public company he founded in 1986, paved the path for a casino shopping spree.
With the announced acquisition of Ameristar Casinos’ development project in Lake Charles, La., on July 24, Fertitta served notice to the gaming industry that he is all-in.
Credit Suisse gaming analyst Joel Simkins said Fertitta has become an “increasingly well-schooled casino competitor.” Because Landry’s doesn’t have public shareholder accountability, Fertitta’s private ownership “deep pockets” means he won’t be as “return-on-investment-focused” as the competition.
Fertitta has shown he isn’t shy about spending money. He’s also found some great deals.
Fertitta spent $38 million in 2011 to buy the run-down Trump Marina in Atlantic City and $45 million last year to acquire the Isle of Capri Biloxi in Mississippi.
He rebranded both casinos as Golden Nuggets, spending more than $100 million each to clean up the properties, renovate the casino floors, add new amenities and drop in some of Landry’s familiar restaurants.
In Atlantic City, the casino now has a Chart House and Vic & Anthony’s. Biloxi will soon be home to a Morton’s Steakhouse and a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
The purchase of the Ameristar development — Louisiana’s last remaining gaming license — gives Fertitta the chance to design a facility from the ground up.
He said the project would have a $600 million budget — up from Ameristar’s announced $580 million figure — and include an 800-room hotel-casino, a Vic & Anthony’s and Grotto Italian Ristorante from Landry’s restaurant portfolio. It also has an 18-hole championship golf course.
At a minimum, Fertitta will cover the development costs Ameristar has spent to date on the 242-acre property — $213.9 million as of June 30 — and assume all other outstanding costs, minus a $37 million credit.
Lake Charles is just 144 miles from Fertitta’s hometown of Houston. The new casino will provide direct competition for the southern Texas customer base of Pinnacle Entertainment’s neighboring L’Auberge Lake Charles.
“I could not pass up the opportunity to build and operate a casino next door to my hometown,” Fertitta said in a statement. “This casino will be where Louisiana locals and Texans will want to play, stay and enjoy themselves.”
Simkins said Fertitta would be able to cross-market his restaurants — Landry’s has more than 100 dining venues in southern Texas — with the new Lake Charles casino.
Coupled with his success in the restaurant and entertainment businesses, Fertitta seemed destined for gaming.
His father and the late Frank Fertitta Jr. — father of Station Casinos owners Frank Fertitta III and Lorenzo Fertitta — were first cousins, which makes Tilman a third cousin to Frank and Lorenzo.
Tilman Fertittas' father was Vic Fertitta (see earlier post). Is there any direct proof they are still involved in criminal activities? Why the fuck should I know? But the Fertittas did work for the Maceo Syndicate, that much is well documented. They came over together from Sicily. Al Capone himself was interested in the Maceo gambling operation in Galvingston from what I have read. The Mafias' involvement in gambling and in Las Vegas is well documented as well. I also know that websites have been sued for making this connection and this type of speculation public. I doubt that will happen here but if this and my previous post gets deleted, you know why. Regardless of all this; I still just like watching the fights and talking about them. These are the gladiators of our day. Who really cares who runs the coliseum?
Let me attempt to undue some of the damage I may have caused this sport. What happens in the background, what we don't see, doesn't matter anymore than what happens behind the scenes in hollywood (and plenty does). What matters is the fights, and they are honest and bloody. For those that have never been in a fight before, they don't last five minutes. Most real fights are over almost as fast as you see on tv shows, they are over in under 60 seconds. These mma fights are by some of the most skilled fighters and atheletes in the world...literally. Atheletes that have been studing and competing in martial arts since early childhood are common and fighters that have competed in multiple styles of competetion are on the average. Take nothing away from these atheletes, they are awesome. The conditioning to fight for three five minute rounds, let alone 5 of them in championship fights, is unbelievable. This is must see tv and makes professional boxing look like a sport for children.
UFC 198 is a great example of what I was talking about. When you hear an announcer saying this fight should be stopped, you know this is the real deal because nobody is going to take that kind of punishment on purpose. I did miss Joe Rogan announcing, love that guy, not a great comedian (not bad though) but a great announcer. Brian Stahn stood in for him and he is a fighter I admired for years so he does know what is going on in the ring and was a good stand-in.
As usual the UFC Fight Pass early prelims were just a good argument to get UFC fight pass and did not disappoint. The prelims followed suit with some real entertaining fights. There is more than one reason they have fights in Brazil every year, great fights and great fighters thrive there. UFC travels a lot but I always look forward to the fights in Brazil. The Yancy Madieras fight....awesome. I won't say I was a fan of the judging, it was poor and in Brazil it tends to favor the Brazillians consistently but fighters have to know that going in by now. It is a common homecourt advantage around the world but probably most apparent in Brazil. The referees were good, I was surprised to see Kevin McDonald there he usually does the Canadian bouts but Big Dan was there and he likes to let those boys fight (all the fighters are younger than me so I will call them boys if I want to). I don't know why but there must have been at least 7 different refs, never saw that many on a card before. It was a little strange.
Demian Maia spent almost three rounds draped on Matt Browns back before he got the choke set it. His ability to get Brown on the ground and keep him there was a surprise to me but more of one to Matt Brown. Brown must have trained exclusively to prevent what happened and his training was a epic failure. Demian called for a title shot...again...and he is going to be hard to deny.
First fight on the main card....a slobbernocker.The Cyborg fight....like feeding raw meat to a dog....it was that ugly. That is why Cris is the Champion. The Main Event? I called that one.

The referees were good, I was surprised to see Kevin McDonald there he usually does the Canadian bouts but Big Dan was there and he likes to let those boys fight (all the fighters are younger than me so I will call them boys if I want to). I don't know why but there must have been at least 7 different refs, never saw that many on a card before. It was a little strange.
Demian Maia spent almost three rounds draped on Matt Browns back before he got the choke set it. His ability to get Brown on the ground and keep him there was a surprise to me but more of one to Matt Brown. Brown must have trained exclusively to prevent what happened and his training was a epic failure. Demian called for a title shot...again...and he is going to be hard to deny.
First fight on the main card....a slobbernocker.The Cyborg fight....like feeding raw meat to a dog....it was that ugly. That is why Cris is the Champion. The Main Event? I called that one.

UFC Fight Night 88 had some pretty good bouts and the main event was a treat.
Strange stoppage in the first early prelims as Chris de la Rocha, bloodied from taking multiple hits throughout the first round and a half, had been dishing out some punishment of his own to his opponent Adam Milstead. As a matter of fact he was still standing and throwing punches when the ref stepped in. Granted, Rocha looked pretty rough but he had never been so much as stunned let alone rocked and Mistead might not have been able to put him away. Hell, I thought he might have punched himself out. Next time let the guys fight till someone at least looks like they are wobbly ref.
Only one womens bout but the outcome was never in question from the word go. Sara McMann took on her old training partner Jessica Eye. Not sure who set this fight up but underestimating Sara McMann by giving her Jessica....looked more like a tune-up fight. McMann had lost a few fights but that happens. She still is the strongest woman in the bantam division and the last woman to defeat the Invicta FC bantam champ. This wasn't that exciting of a fight actually but it takes two to fight and the only one doing anything was McMann.

A lot of blood was spilt in this event, which is always a good indicator of how good an mma event is.

UFC 199 is coming up very soon so I thought I would make some comments on it:
Luke Rockhold is the shit and while I have every reason to believe he will not only defeat Bisping and retain his title I have even more of a reason to think he will finsih him. However.....Bisping is finally getting a title shot he has been working towards for years. Bispings win over Silva was inspiring. Despite the fact that Rockhold choked Bisping out last time out I think Bisping is due. His cardio is that of a lightweight and he is a better striker than Rockhold. If Bisping keeps it on the feet and stuffs takedowns he could win a decision here. Put a few dollars on Michael Bisping who is going in as a big underdog.
I hate Dominck Cruz and admire Urijah Faber. I don't like Cruzs' attitude or the way he fights. I want to see Cruz get bloodied and so does Faber. I don't care who is the better fighter, this is an emotional pick. Faber by KO.
There are some other great fights on the card but they are pretty hard to pick. Dan Henderson is fighting....still...but he hasn't lost his ability to finish opponents. I wouldn't bet on him, unless the odds were good but I wouldn't dare bet against him either.
There is only one womens bout on the card (glad to get that, I guess) and it is Jessica Penne against Jessica Andrade. Battle of the Jessicas'. Penne matches up very well here but she has been off a full year since her brutal beating at the the hands of Joanna Jedrzejczyk (that is a last name I always have to look up to spell right). I mean it was the worst beating I have ever seen a girl take in the ring, it was like blood porn. You never know how someone is going to come back from that. I wouldn't blame her if she had quit the sport entirely. I figure this is a tune-up match for her, just to see if she still has the heart to fight. Andrade doesn't know this though so it might be a decent fight. My money is on Penne, she is all heart.

Some really good names on this card so if you get a chance, visit your local bar or bar/restruant that has this on and stay to see it. Max Holloway, Hector Lombard, Dustin Poirier, Clay Guida (vs Brian Ortega oh yeah!), Cole Miller and Sean Strickland are all on this card. Incredible casts make for incredible movies. this could be one of the best cards if not thee best card of the whole year.

If you have seen some of the great fights in womens MMA and still don't like it, well, you have that right. I enjoy it more, actually. Now women fighting men would be ludicrous (that is just for the movies) but these catfights are serious stuff and fun to watch. Neither the men or women are your average athelete and they train with an intensity and develop skills that I can only admire.
Enjoyed reading your comment. Cruz gives Faber flac over the last opponent he beat but Frankie Saenz is anybody but a nobody and I think we will see that at UFC on Fox 20. Saenz will be a contender one day. What is true is Fabers lack of high ranked wins in the last few years but there are politics that go into match making. That is the promotion game. There is certainly no shame in his losses to Frankie Egdar and Barao, who are the only ones to defeat Faber since his last fight with Cruz.
It's way easier to be an Analyst judging others on FOX than uplifting and caring for others than oneself, that's why Faber, always.
