Are retired JAV stars ever taken seriously?

Yuma Asami says she became a singer and actress after retiring from JAV. I don't have much perspective not being in Japan, but have former JAV stars ever had real success making the transition to non-sexual media?

Sasha Grey tried to make it as a legit actress in the US, but most of her Hollywood/indie movies flopped and she couldn't break away from her porn star mold. It seems either Sasha Grey wasn't a good enough actress or viewers were simply unable to view her in a non-pornographic setting.

Curious if this is the same for JAV stars.

how do you define success? not many become superstars in in traditional media, but many have steady careers in things. Maria Ozawa has a steady tv job in I think Taiwan, Sora Aoi is still highly popular in China, and has a solid amount of success in china, and south korea with her music career. Anri Okita does a crap ton of appearances, and they won't dry up anytime soon, Many other girls do a lot of B movies or television appearances, so there's been some "success" just nothing at a superstar level

My two cents: most who retire but still keep their stage names are obviously wanting to use their former careers as an AV star to kickstart their new one as <insert talent here>. Whether that leads to success or not is debatable, but historically-speaking, most who try this route do not succeed if their sights are set on extremely lofty goals like A-rank mainstream stardom.

It's impossible for the general public to take them seriously. However, Shu Qi did manage to become a sex icon and lower A-lister even though she did a lot of softcore solos, but all her other sex apperances are with famous actors in the 90's. Any top hardcore av idols or western pornstars would have moderate success in their prime to live comfortably, but not enough to become well respected and reputable actor. Lower end pornstars might go back to their normal lives like school, get a job, and start a family. Some might get fired and come back to stripping at clubs or porn. Heard a lot if case from U.S and Japan. It's ironic that some do it to pay for their tuition, but got fired for doing it.

Yuma is a singer. Mihiro and saori hara are both married and still filming minor roles for tv(variety, toku, late night, web) and movies(pink, horror). Maria is working in Philippine because of the royal connection there. Sora Aoi, Anri Okita, and Rola Misaki got a lot of offers from Taiwan, China, and other Asian countries to star in stereotypical sexy roles in movies, commercials, or variety talk/game shows. They get a lot if stage offers and party offers from perverted companies and dirty businessman too. Most current av idols are filiming in tv and variety show in Japan and outside too. Most notably Shoko and Yua Mikami. Yui Hatano get a lot of Taiwan offers to appear in commercials. Even non-av idols like rio uchida, mikie hara, yuuri, reon kadena, and more get these opportunities too.

Minami Kojima and Shoko Takahashi appears in this tv drama this week. Next week will be Yua Mikami. Their official youtube channel upload eps1 without region lock.

I agree with paparoach and inertia, its depend on how you define success, there a lot of them who active outside AV

in the west beside Sasha Grey, there are Sibel Kekili who played in some german movies and also one of the most popular series in the world : Game of Thrones

from France we have Clara Morgane, who became tv show presenter

and Eva Henger became celebrities in Italy

Just dropping in to say I thought Sasha Grey gave a pretty great performance in Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience.

Granted, she was playing a call girl, but the film was far more about the emotional repercussions of the lifestyle than the sex. Found it pretty effecting.

Apologies for potentially off topic post, carry on. Suppose my point, though, is that I do think she had talent and it's too bad society refuses to take a person who made choices in porn seriously, after the fact.
