Found myself here and had a chance to look a bit more in-depth at this kickin' thread, after trying to help someone who had a question at the "Discussion" section. I was familiar with Member JPTOr from yet another thread (Slimedog's Lesbian JAV) where he is generally quiet; but it was very nice to see him to "talk" for once, answering questions of the other members, and showing off his personality. (Also nice of him to take requests, as he did a few months back.)

I'm impressed that folks here are responsive to I.D. questions, and I am curious about the blond lady on the cover of DIVAS-027.

Kusanagi, I wish to thank you for providing me with the "Nicole Aniston" answer to my question, from the previous page.

Member Slouch has asked above, "these are some huge files, why are JAV videos so big?"

Good thing I went through some of the back pages yesterday, as I remembered Member 山川智之 (Tomoyuki Yamakawa) addressing a similar question recently. Here was his take on it.

I remember on another thread Member SamKook - who is technically very knowledgeable - tackling the same concern. As I recall, his answer boiled down basically to the fact that the - apparently, usually Chinese (as I think I had come across somewhere else) - folks who rip these films are doing a quick and lazy man's job; in the past, it seems there was more care devoted to the ins and outs of the encoding process. This is why sometimes one can download a monster file, and the supposedly "HD" quality can still come across as blurry.

山川智之 added another reason, which I was not aware of:

"The larger the size is, the more reward uploaders get"

From what I have gathered, I thought the way in which uploaders receive their kickbacks came from their encouragement for downloaders to sign up for file hosters' premium services, as well as the multi-links. The more links, the more clicks, and therefore the more cash.

If 山川智之 is reading (or if others know the reason), I would be interested in learning why the larger the file, the greater the reward for uploaders.

I suppose because many downloaders have also become "professional" at this game, they have made sure to invest in blazing fast Internet service providers; some promise 15 MB/s. I'm lucky if I get 122 KB/s. So the uploaders get plenty of "customers," and they don't give a second thought about putting up packages that go well over one gigabyte for a two hour movie.

Yet as 山川智之put it, "Unless I really, really need one that particular scene/girl, I just let it go." Exactly. It's not just a matter of the time and trouble involved, it's also hard drive space. (Which one needs to multiply by two, given that back-ups are essential. I pointed out these problems in a thread I started.)

I realize it takes time to re-encode movies, but if I were in the business of making these properties available to the public, I would consider doing so. Offering 2-3-4 GB packages defeats the purpose of what this activity promises, at least in terms of its "noble" origins, and that is file-sharing. You can't share with the whole community in mind if you only target the elite; those with the fastest Internet speeds and the largest storage capacities.

Yes, Slouch, there are video converters, many that are free, that promise to do the job; I have experience with Hamster Free Video Converter and Any Video Converter. They're fine sometimes, their chief advantage being that they prevent you from needing to get into the technical ins and outs. Just push a button, and on the surface, the perfect solution for the dummies among us. The problem is that the results can be uneven; the aspect ratio can be off, the audio can be off-sync, that sort of thing.

The best success I've had is with a bona-fide video-editing program (mine is Vegas). Problem: a conversion could take hours.

The very Kool Akiba-Online member, SamKook, was kind enough to point me in the right direction, although I have not investigated yet. Here's the thread:

In addition, Member Casshern2 has a method that promises amazing quality while keeping the files small. Again, I have not devoted the time to learn about it, but the idea sounds very exciting (disappointingly not many in Akiba-Online Land appeared to be interested, and we can surmise why... it takes work to get to the bottom of these things. Yet once learned, I'm sure the process will prove to be a piece of cake):

SamKook informed me (keeping in mind computer power and speed; his probably is up there) that the time it takes to encode a movie is one hour. That sounds very reasonable and, really, the caring and considerate uploader (who has decided to make a "career" out of making films available) has no excuse. (Unless, as Member 山川智之 has informed us, it serves their financial purpose to keep the files large. I don't understand why, and I would appreciate learning about it.)
