So i never needed to do this and now that i'd like to, i have no idea. I know it's childs play for many here so go easy on me.

I just need something that will convert my dvd to a compressed format like avi or mp4. Something easy, i don't want complicated. I don't need super quality, just basic rip.

What DVD is this? If it's interlaced (like all Japanese Idol / Porn DVDs are) then there is nothing easier than the program in my signature. The downside is that you need a beefy CPU for it to work quickly.

Regardless of which program you choose, your retail DVD will first have to be decrypted. The standard program for that is DVD Decrypter. Make sure you're in "File" Mode, choose your Source DVD drive, choose a destination folder on your hard drive, and click the big fat "Decrypt" button.

DVD decryptor reduces it to either iso or VIDEO_TS correct? Then you need something to compress it? Is that what Megu IV is for?

edit: my apologies, reading your guide now, Rollyco....if i have any questions i'll add them.

How long should an encode take? It looks like forever on my end. I selected the 2nd best quality, and left other variables as indicated in your guide. Total project length looks to exceed 3 hours, and estimated time often increases....

Is that normal?

If it ends up to be 3 hours, that's very good. My computer takes about 9 hours on the highest settings.

Holy patience, Batman!

ok, i though there was some issue. I mean DVD decryptor takes about 20 minutes to work, so in relation, that's alot longer......

Wait....can't i just copy the data from the dvd to my pc rather than using dvd decryptor?

No. If you disc is retail (silver) it must be decrypted. If you already have a COPY of a disc (like on a DVD+R or .ISO), then you don't need DVD Decrypter because it's already been decrypted.

Last I tried to convert using Megu IV, it said 20+ hrs....I have a slow pc, and can't upgrade right now. This is why I stick to my .avi conversion using handbrake. I think I'm going to send some ISOs your way for easy conversion bro:)

Cheers.

No kidding! Only 3 hours for a MeguIV encode! What kind of rig are you running, diomedes? Some new prototype processor?

If time is an issue, you could use the program illuminatus3 mentioned: Handbrake. It should move quite a bit quicker than MeguIV, but the quality won't be as good (lower file-size though). Another thing about handbrake, sometimes you can encode straight from the disk. There's no way to tell, other than checking the disks though. Using handbrake in windows, I've been able to go straight off the disk with 30-40% of my DVDs. The rest get error messages due to copy protections. A friend of mine who uses the same program, but on an apple computer, says he's almost never received an error message encoding straight from the disk (I'm somewhat skeptical, but I don't have a mac to check with).

I guess my 2cents would be this: If you're ever making a encode for your ipod or iphone, I'd give handbrake a shot. The file-size will be smaller, and you probably won't notice too much quality difference on a small screen. If you're looking for a superior DVD quality rip (that often looks better than the disc itself) or a rip for archive or backup, stick with MeguIV.

I finally understand.....i never knew this. I feel enlightened, thanks for that.

Indeed, it's for my new precious toy, the iphone. It turns out that the only practical way of me watching many IVs is on that thing (largely when i am not supposed to because some aspects of my work involve the brain work of a stone, and i can get away with it nicely), so as a result i'm converting basically everything i have to mp4, approx 400MB size per vid. That said, i'll look into handbrake, although megu IV is easy to use, so i'm glad i have that at my disposal.

Well, as i mentioned, i did a run on it that was basically low quality. My "rig", as lowleg calls it, ain't anything to write home about last time i checked. I've never been a pc performance kind of guy, but i know it's good. Anyway, i'd say send them ISOs over my friend, but if you knew my upload bandwidth capacity, you'd immediately recoil with horror and disgust. It's flammin pathetic....

I had a feeling this had something to do with a portable apple product!

Handbrake has a few presets laid out in its GUI for different portable units. Using the iphone or ipod video presets really helps keep the size down. No matter what the storage size on your iphone, you should be able to load up quite a bit of video!

agreed. Its always better to have options.
