HVEC / H.265

I downloaded this movie a few days ago but I just noticed that its encoded in HEVC. Probably the first JAV of its kind. Glad to see people are beginning to use this new codec. Hopefully HD encodes will be smaller.

Not exactly a recent thread, but here's my reply anyway.

I gave it a try a bit over a year ago, but the result wasn't great so I gave up on it for now.
It achieves a smaller file size by having a blurrier picture so it wasn't worth using it yet, especially since it took almost 5 times longer to encode.

They're still working on the core features to this day(for x265 at least) so it's still no ready to be used as a replacement for h.264.

I wonder how x265 will fair once it is basically finalized. Worth the hype hopefully.

Funny story. ..years ago when I first used the command line way of encoding with x264 I did something wrong and ended up with a 5MB file and jumped up and down at how small the file size was.

I have watched some HVEC releases, even posted some. Good quality but not a whole lot of difference. Not sure why they are supposed to be smaller though as I have not always found that to be the case.

Currently, it's likely on par with h264 for the quality vs size ratio(I didn't really test 2 file at the same bitrate though) as you say.
That's because x264 is optimized to death and x265 pretty much isn't at all since they have more important things to focus on first.

In the future, files made with x265 will be smaller than files made with x264 at the same quality.
If you use an x264 release that's a couple years old vs a current one, you'll notice quite the difference in file size if you use a variable bitrate setting to encode so it's really good that x265 can already compete with a current x264 release this early in its life.

Kinda related but why no 10bit encodes? When watching anime I love downloading stuff from Hi10Anime. The files sizes are tiny and the quality is still pretty great. I have yet to find a JAV that is encoded in 10bit

Look, I know that a whole mess of JAV is shared here but let us have some perspective.....it is porn. Not exactly high-def related content. You have a better chance of finding Korean reality shows in higher defintion than your average JAV movie....and there is a reason for that.

I guess you didn't check out the post I linked(probably because it somehow send to the completely wrong page for some reason, here's another one that will hopefully work, post #7540 in the thread) then which has a 10 bit version as well as the hevc one. I've been making 10 bit encodes of JAV for years. I am the only one as far as I know though. Vitreous thought about doing some but I don't know if he actually did.

As for why you don't see it much outside of anime is that the gain is much higher the less complex the picture is so you'll see a lot more gain with drawn cartoons than with a real world video and it takes longer to encode(it used to be twice as much, but I think that dropped quite a bit, I'd need to test it again).

As for why that's really not popular, most, if not all players don't support it apparently. I've had a guy or two test it and for it to work, some TV setting had to be changed for it to be properly viewable.
