I have Samsung Odyssey Plus, too
I have watched some 8K VR videos and they look stunning, like real life, but my PC can't handle them, they look choppy. What GPU do you have? I have a GTX 1070, but I think the problem is not the hardware, but the codec. The 8K videos I have tried use a codec than can't be decodec via hardware by my player (Whirligig) and they look choopy. Or maybe it is because I use 500% of supersampling...
As I always say, more resolution is very important in VR. It is the diference between a blurry 3D video and real life image. I don't download anything less than 4K.
Unfortunately, the image quality of JAV VR is very poor, the western titles look much better. And it is getting worse year by year. Titles from CRVR and KVR and others used 40 Mbps of bitrate in 2018, and 30 Mbps in 2020... This summer I have bought at A Festa titles from 2018 than look a lot of better than 2020 releases. Muuuuch better, from the same label. It is depressing.
Seems like you have a very similar setup to mine
I have the same GPU and your right, i experienced the stuttering too but got this codec
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions/9nmzlz57r3t7?activetab=pivot:overviewtab and now they work really smooth (at least with deovr, got some issues with whirlgig, but tbh. dont use that player a lot).
I heard you can get it for free (google it) but for me the 1€/$ was a good investment.
For playing videos a faster GPU doesnt give you any benefit as starting from the entry level Gefore cards they have the same video decoder.
Yes resolution is absolutely important for VR. Tbh. 4k is the absolute bare minimum, because on VR you are much closer to the screen, so for me it has the visual impression of 480p (2D video) in my headset, while 8K VR feels more like 720p to 1080p already.
Have you done some A/B-Testing whether the super-sampling gives you any increase in quality?I dont really have the full understanding how it works but afaik its supposed to give you an quality increase only on games where textures are rendered., while on videos (unless they are 8k or something like that), there cant be an increase in quality. Its like upscaling an video.
Regarding the bitrate: I just checked my library and it seems that the highest bitrate on my videos is something like 32Mbps and they look absolultely fine to me. I had some videos where i noticed that the quality was really bad and deleted them after i realized the bitrate is under 20Mbps. Can you give any IDs for the high quality 40Mbps videos? Its also important to note that bitrate alone gives you only an indication of quality. New modern codecs (especially used on higher Resolution western videos) are more efficient, so the bitrate is lower while having the same or higher quality.
Anyways, I really appreciate your posts (only been reading the last 25 pages of this thread).
I got like 6 TB worth of selected downloads (mostly younger girls, hehe). Most unplayable on PSVR without processing them first.
So, I waiting for Quest 2 and preordered. I like that it's stand-alone. Perhaps it can even stream video via WiFi 6 even though 256GB is pretty much.
I wonder how fast they move to 90Hz. Or perhaps that's just for games, idk.
As far as it concerns AV, you might even want to set the refresh rate to 60Hz. When I got my Odyssey plus (90hz by default) i noticed that the video was really choppy compared to my old Oculus Go. After changing it to 60Hz it was fine.
For games its different of course.
I have placed an preorder for the oculus quest 2 as well (hope i can make it work in my country as they dont officially sell it in here). Even though i got the 256GB as well, for me I will continue to stream from my NAS (can recommend synology). It was the best investment in that regard. No more transfering of files.
//just saw your signature, you obviously have an NAS already
