Had success joining .001 & .002 files with HJsplit. But having problems wit __a & __b split files. Does it take a different program or technique to join files?

simple DOS commands...
-----------------------

Step 1
----------------------------------------------
In notepad create a new file called DIRIT.BAT

right click > edit file

enter the following

for all files, enter...

DIR /b *.* >> FileList.txt

for only files like *.001, enter..

DIR /b *.### >> FileList.txt

for only files like *.__a, enter..

DIR /b *._?? >> FileList.txt

close and save

doubleclick DIRIT.BAT

Step 2
----------------------------------------------
open the resulting file called FileList.txt

find the line saying

X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileList.txt

and delete it

X:\Dirname\Dirname\ is the local filepath to where you saved all your files...

Step 3
----------------------------------------------

Make sure the list of files is in sequential order as they should be combined...
This is sometimes a trick on windows as it doesnt understand how to order numbers by numbers but does it as letters.

the list you should see is like

X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.001
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.002
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.003
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.004
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.005
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.006

or

X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.__a
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.__b
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.__c
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.__d
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.__e
X:\Dirname\Dirname\FileName.__f

and so on...

Now select, in Notepad, EDIT >> REPLACE

replace all occurences of

X:\Dirname\Dirname\

with

+"

then replace all endings with

"

remove all line breaks

on the first line enter

COPY /B {rest of your data here}

End the string in the file with

/B FileName.nnn

where nnn is the final file extension...

assuming this is a mpg file, your file should look like this...

COPY /B "FileName.__a"+"FileName.__b"+"FileName.__c"+"FileName.__d"+"FileName.__e"+"FileName.__f" /B "FileName.mpg"

Save te FileList.txt as CopyAll.bat and double click it inside the directory of all your filesegments to start joining.

what this in effect does is, copying the file segments in binary mode, into another binary mode file in the order specified.
No need for extra programs to do this and it works with all files as long you have all parts and the correct file extension.

OK a little addition but use it at your own risk!!!

I made a little gadget here that could be useful for Windows users
SimpleFileJoiner - Akiba Edition...

(Chompy feel free to drop me a pm if you dont want the Akiba edition.
I can always remove the layout. click the About!/Help button in the app to see it.)

This thing will join any files of any type regardless of extension, type, format and so on. Read the rtf file (also linked as a help file so it should be located in the application path of the exe).

Straight forward windows API Win32 VB 5 program, need VB6 runtimes only.

I tried it on a HJSplit RAR file and it was quicker than HJSplit.
I have no __a, __b files to try it on but it joined anyting I tossed at it except partial rar files for some reason.

This should work on Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and so forth.
Most likely Vista as well but I dont touch that beast at all.

Enjoy.

Edit note:
Fixed a layout issue in the joiner.
Now you can read the whole file name of a segment.
PM me any issues if you find any. / Techie

Hi, are you saying to watch a show, the uploader post the following files:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YGCZ8UKP
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KSGYD20Z
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2BEFEKUO
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A63PH2Q9
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4UDW5E2J
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=U0HDX5S0
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MMZNL3HJ
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8DCRT2TW
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MA9FKCSN
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z5GEWJNH

usually I can watch the 1st file (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YGCZ8UKP) because it is downloaded as avi file. But the 2nd file (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KSGYD20Z) once downloaded cannot open. When I use File spliter to split this (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KSGYD20Z) into 8 smaller files, they read file name.avi.001.003 all having same name.

What am I suppose to do?

The files that were uploaded to Megaupload are split files, You have to join them into a single file, not split the individual files again (that would be pointless).

fr0stbyte do you mean I have to down load all the files then join them or I can download the first 2 files then join them. I can then later join the 3rd file to the combined file for 1st and 2nd?

Dear guy, when I download a file say SRR-82.avi.001. Once it is downloaded into my desktop, it is written as SPR-82.avi. So as I download SRP-82.avi.002, it will also show SPR-82.avi. However, under file type, it will show 001 file, 002 file and so on.

I did try to join file 001 with 002 and is successful. But when I tried to join file 003, the output part is tricky. Do I over right the first joined file which contain files 001 and 002? When I try to open this joined file which has the size of the 3 files together, I can only view file 1 content.

Anyone care to help?

You have to download all the files first (for example there are 3 files over-all; you must download all of those 3 files before you join them). Joining the 3 files is done at the SAME TIME. You do not join the 1st and 2nd file first then add up the preceding files.

Basically, if the poster of the download links were a sane person.. The files would be named like this:

-EXAMPLE ONLY-
XV-531 Rio.avi.001 or XV-531 Rio.avi.__a
XV-531 Rio.avi.002 or XV-531 Rio.avi.__b
XV-531 Rio.avi.003 or XV-531 Rio.avi.__c
XV-531 Rio.avi.004 or XV-531 Rio.avi.__d

You download ALL THE FILES FIRST then JOIN THEM AT THE SAME TIME. No need to rename the files. Once they are joined you'll get a single file:
XV-531 Rio.avi

The size of which is equal to the 4 files listed above COMBINED.

From what I can see from your posts, you're unable to see the *.001 on your first file. The said extension (*.001) cannot be seen once you install a file splitter/joiner program because the said program associates with *.001. All files with recognized file extensions (such as *.mp3 and *.avi) cannot be seen by default. The *.001 or *.__a files are also unique because they have an icon. This is also the case with your *.001 files. You can only see *.002 (and so on) files because only the *.001 are recognized by the file splitter/joiner program. This will be the end result (in your case):

XV-531 Rio.avi or XV-531 Rio. (WITH ICON)
XV-531 Rio.avi.002 or XV-531 Rio.avi.__b
XV-531 Rio.avi.003 or XV-531 Rio.avi.__c
XV-531 Rio.avi.004 or XV-531 Rio.avi.__d

Note that the file extension is still there but system hides it from view.

If you want to see the *.001 or *.__a on the first file. Go to TOOLS menu (besides HELP) and click FOLDER OPTIONS. Once a new window opens, click on the VIEW tab and look for the ADVANCE SETTINGS BOX. There you will need to look for an a check box with a text HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES. I assume this check box is enabled so you have to uncheck it. After this you should be able to see the *.001 or *.__a file extension on the first part of every split file. Note that you will also see file extensions for all the file types (jpg, avi, bmp, mp3, exe, doc, ETC).

The second problem would be the fact that you attempt to JOIN THE FILES WITHOUT COMPLETING THE DOWNLOAD FOR ALL FILES. We're not building Lego parts here. You DO NOT join part 001 to part 002 first, then add part 003 to the conjoined part 001 & 002, and add part 004 later to the conjoined part 001 002 & 003 and so on. YOU JOIN THE FILES TOGETHER ONCE YOU HAVE THEM ALL ON YOUR DRIVE. For example, you want to download a movie which has four parts. You download all FOUR parts unto your hard-drive first before you attempt to join them.

If my explanation wasn't enough then I guess you'll have to wait for someone else to bump this thread.

I don't wanna be blunt but this discussion is getting ridiculously long. This is definitely not rocket science. This is the basics of basics in Windows.

MAC os X is Unix (NIX based) so it's a different strategy but should work there too.
See if you cannot get a command line list for UNIX and you should be able to puzzle it together

Here is a start for it all

http://www.westwind.com/reference/OS-X/commandline/text-files.html

And here is a more in-depth one for UNIX as a hole

http://www.matisse.net/OSX/intro_unix/0_outline.html

And here is the index of applicable command line commands on Apple OS X specifically

http://www.ss64.com/osx/

HJSplit has a version for Mac

You can also try using
http://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat/

I don't use MACs, but if OSX is like Unix (which it's supposed to be) then it should be really simple. Just type:

cat file.001 file.002 file.003 > file.avi

I do it all the time on unix/linux systems.
