Kagoshima Volcano erupts

The volcano Sakurajima in southern Japan erupted during Tuesday on a larger scale, spewing out lava, blocks of stones and smoke.

There are no reports of damages caused by the volcana which is located in a bay area near the ciy of Kagoshima with nearly 700,000 inhabitants.

Regardless the authorities have raised the alert level in the region.

The volcano measuring some 1,117 above the sea had a major eruption in 1914 which was classified as the largest in the 20'th century, after which the volcano retruned to dormancy until 1955.

This volcano has several thoussands of minor eruptions every year throwing stones and ashes several kilometers into the air.

Vulkanen Sakurajima i södra Japan fick under tisdagen ett större utbrott och spydde ut lava, stenblock och rök.

Den finns inga uppgifter om skador från vulkanen, som ligger i en bukt intill staden Kagoshima med nästan 700.000 invånare.

Men myndigheterna i staden har höjt beredskapen på grund av den seismiska aktiviteten.

Vulkanen, som är 1.117 meter över havet, hade ett stort utbrott 1914 vilket betraktas som det största i Japan under 1900-talet. Därefter föll den i sömn, men vaknade åter till liv 1955.
