I had to look up hafu, but then only the twitch streamer came up... But I finally got it!

"whether Cyndi Wang is Hakka, half Hakka or not is only meaningful if Hakka shows up in her products, i.e. music and acting."

I don't agree. I think the simple fact that someone is "hafu" (or of any ethnicity or nationality, even) is going to be meaningful to some degree even if it doesn't come up in that person's work.

Going by her wiki page, answer is no.

Well, the wiki might not mention it, but actually, in one of her songs (one that I have actually linked before on the forums) she says "wo ai ni" in Hakka (same words just a bit different pronunciation), she has played a Hakka in one of her TV series (Love Keeps Going/美樂加油 I think) and she was on a TV show about Hakka people. And that's just what I'm aware of without any knowledge of Mandarin, so there might be more.

As for every "half" media celebrity not needing to be a tragic character, obviously, I agree, although in Cyndi's case her parents went separate ways and she was raised by her (Hakka) mother, so I guess it's easy to understand where she's coming from. Besides, she ruined her perfect face with plastic surgery - what's a tragedy if not that? :depr:

PS: maybe I'm a bit extreme, don't be shy to call me out. I don't think Obama is Black or even Half Black, there, bring it on.

Oh, you know I'll call you out any day! :D As for Obama, well, he's not white, so he's at least half black. But I'd say he's black.

I was being fast and loose with hafu... I wanted to emphasize the uniquely Japanese angle of "ハーフ", so doing a quick check... a more proper way to Romanize it should be haafu.

she has played a Hakka in one of her TV series (Love Keeps Going/美樂加油 I think) ... although in Cyndi's case her parents went separate ways and she was raised by her (Hakka) mother, so I guess it's easy to understand where she's coming from.
Well ok, that is something. I always think many Hakka's insistence to marry only within Hakka to be preposterous, but perhaps there's something there... is a Hakka-non-Hakka mixed marriage doomed to fail? And how that influenced Cyndi's career. Yes... there's something there...

some (often Caucasian mixed) stand out, talent agencies use them a lot and the way J society work they are often made to feel "foreign" even if they haven't left the country!...
I have heard several JAV stars are zainichi kankoujin but conceal this from the public...Sora Aoi was one rumor i heard
Yes... I noticed conspicuous haafu appearing more and more in J- and K- entertainment. Often for no special purpose other than being an exotic/pretty flower vase. E.g. Justin Tomimori in Kamen Rider Fourze, his height and pretty face is quite striking in an otherwise very minor role.

So that's great to discuss my angle. Let's say, for argument, that Sora Aoi was really a closet Korean Japanese, but the fact that she and/or the studio kept that a secret, then for this conversation about watching porn, her Korean bloodline is completely irrelevant, bluntly speaking, it does not affect in anyway the function of the AV (masturbation). In another context if I decide to be interested about racism and discrimination, then yes she's an interesting subject.

If there's one thing that I dislike about Japan, it's that mixed people are considered to be not Japanese at all in Japan. Even a 87.5% Japanese person is treated as a foreigner in their own country. So they have to hide their identity as Sushigoround mentioned.

It's also the same to some extent in the USA, where people who are half-white and half-black are generally considered to be black instead of white. Once their whiteness has been tainted by any amount of blackness, that whiteness is gone. That racist way of thinking is bad enough in America, and Japan takes it to an extreme level.

Well my brother's best friend is a Hakka Taiwanese who used to debate (back in school days) with me about the merit of Japanese colonization of Taiwan. He thought Imperial Japan was loads better than KMT and don't even mention the Communists to him (well I had no love for the CCP either, but it's hard to accept being oppressed by foreigners is less worse). Now... he's built his tech career entirely in Shanghai and married a mainlander (Hakka or not I don't know), he still hates the KMT but seems he's learned to live in a communist country.

Sorry that's a distraction... There's a point somewhere... and not entirely OT even...

You know I am not a fanboy, so whether Cyndi Wang is Hakka, half Hakka or not is only meaningful if Hakka shows up in her products, i.e. music and acting. Going by her wiki page, answer is no. It's like my father's culture is "rice first, soup last" my mother's culture is "soup first, rice last" and so my habit became "whatever comes to my face first, get eaten first". WHO CARES? It's her private family language/religion/habits, if it's not in her songs it's just fanboy gossips.

So take Maria Ozawa, the quintessential hafu JAV idol. The "hafu-ness" is in her products. Firstly her face and body (for back then) was very exotic. Her look alone can well pass for a foreigner without her agency or promoter hanging a sign around her neck. Then when she spoke she demonstrated her bilingualism in a few of her AVs and other professional appearances (IIRC she played an English tutor in a DVD). And her backstory, real or embellished or fake or whatever, was more than minimally-detailed, that counts for something. Also I argue strongly that there's something even more subtle and powerful of a hafu persona in her AV's. Her AVs seems more edgy and daring and almost hellish than typical of that time. I watched her, I jerked off to her and I felt sad for her. A hafu, from a half-broken family, making porn but not just that. She didn't settle for a financially comfortable career, she went for a darker path by choice.

Of course I am not saying every "half" media celebrity need to be a tragic character. But many supposed "mixed blooded AV actress" being pasted in this thread (eg. Monika Hasegawa) has no "hafu-ness" other than a few word labels hyped on DVD covers. Even if it's true I don't GIVE A CARE unless it's in her products, say she speaks a mother tongue other than Japanese in a scene. I could be wrong... I didn't research most of the "mixed actress" in this thread, but the discussion gave me no impression that any of them are "real".

PS: maybe I'm a bit extreme, don't be shy to call me out. I don't think Obama is Black or even Half Black, there, bring it on.
Maria Ozawa is an interesting story for sure. If you watch any of her English language interviews she makes it pretty clear she was all about becoming famous. Where that almost pathological desire comes from I'm not sure but it's interesting to speculate that she wanted to out Japanese the Japanese in their own JAV industry even though she's hapa. She seem s to love all things Japanese but sometimes her comments about the culture sound more like something a westerner would say.

I've had a lot of experience with hapas having lived in Hawaii and now Southern California. I had a really good friend who was a Japanese American woman in Hawaii who told me that virtually all of her friends would love to have a hapa baby but were not willing to put up with the potential social ostracizing. This seemed to be a Japanese thing as most of the other ethnicities like Chinese, Viets, Filipinos, etc. had much less of an issue with it.

In SoCal, I see very little stigma and having an Asian girl friend is kind of in.

I wonder if Elly Sasaki (Eri Sasaki, 佐々木エリー, not to be confused with Eri Hosaki) has any of that alien blood infiltration business going on.

The first two titles of her first provided link above drop hints about her being an "Overseas Model" and that she "Came Back to Japan." For whatever all of that is worth.

there are a lot of half women (and men) in Japan, many just fit in and don`t look much different, some (often Caucasian mixed) stand out, talent agencies use them a lot and the way J society work they are often made to feel "foreign" even if they haven't left the country!

they are put on a pedestal but can be discriminated against at the same time, I knew many when I was there, I even knew several schoolgirls that kept being half Thai or other Asian secret. This is very true of the "Koreans in Japan" zainichi kankoujin even if the are born in Japan 3rd generation, due to great grandparents are considered Korean...and need to carry Alien registration cards at all times.

Its not only happened in Japan, what I know this happened in many other asian countries too, especially in south east asia

I have heard several JAV stars are zainichi kankoujin but conceal this from the public...Sora Aoi was one rumor i heard

it might be true, now we can see a lot of JAV girls who doesn't look like pure japanese, they looks more like chinese or korean

well like I said before its not only happened in Japan, they talk about kickout racism everywhere but the fact is racism and dicrimination still happen

in China they still discriminate chinese who born and grown up in other countries

yes that alien card is extreme

"Genuine overseas model" and "Reverse Import Model", sounds like a foreign born Japanese or a native born Japanese who went overseas and came back. But only briefly, 4 titles in 6 months and then quietly disappeared. Probably went back overseas. Hot looking, but she doesn't stay, well good luck and good bye. (BTW @jugulear you have a talent for picking unflattering photos for hot girls)

I think there's an important trend here that may be causing a lot of grief: adopting or even giving Western given names no longer implies alien blood, as in Maria Ozawa and Justin Tomimori. Up until around the 80s, it's customary to give babies traditional Kanji names, that is not even native (words from prehistoric origin free of Chinese influence) Japanese words are used for people's names, e.g. Ozawa 小澤 is little-lake or stream. Then (along with social change blah blah) it became more acceptable to name babies (especially baby girls it seems) purely Hiragana names with no Kanji association and no meaning (Meguri めぐり).

Now I wonder if there's a trend, perhaps as those avant-garde babies with non-Kanji names grow up and have babies, to name their babies with even more Westward outlook, to give babies Western/Christian names written in Katakana, without any reason related to foreign bloodline, place of birth or nationality.

Well I don't know... maybe that's too radical even for post-Koizumi Japan. But for porn names... I think it's happening. Porn names seems more and more casually adopted and changed (Shion -> Rion) so why not use Katakana/Western names even if it would then be too-obviously-not-her-real-name. It's now either a marketing message that "this girl's typecast is nontraditional" or even "this girl isn't a career sex star, but not a totally forgettable amateur either" Let's give her an obviously fake name, she will have a short career making less than 10 vids but they would be hugely profitable, and she will quietly quit the sex industry before paparazzi and @jugulear dig up her real name and entire backstory and paste it all over the internet.

She is exotic enough to be listed here. Maybe not so exotic for the Japanese tho.

南国 means southern country... meaning Ryukyu or Okinawa I assume.

I nominate Rena Fukiishi.

I do not have concrete evidence or website link for reference.

My observations:
Rena Fukiishi has natural, big, floppy tits. Her body appears to be US/European/Russian(?) because she is thicker than typical JAV actress. My initial thought was "Russian". She likes purple and has tan lines :)

lets wait and see, now she became populer, maybe we'll get news about her bloodline soon

Well... she doesn't "look" Japanese.

Oddly, one of her movies was listed in the "Collection of JAV with White Actresses (and a Few Black Ones Too)" thread, as though one-half of her (or at least some portion) was not Japanese. (I'm going to take that as "proof" that she is mixed.)

She appeared in few movies, and has also earned a spot in the "One and Done" thread.

Sure is possible, EroMura777; I'm imagining because she evidently lives in Japan and evidently speaks Japanese (heck, her first name is "Yuki"... a-ha, proof!), the odds are she's got some of that banzai DNA inside of her. But... who knows?

At least as a novelty ('cause no one cares about the men), an actor named Carlos was recently discussed in the Good, Bad, Ugly and Tubby thread. He does not look Japanese, much like Yuki Victoria... and yet he is half-Japanese. We learned he may be the only mixed-blooded JAV "Actor," his mother being Colombian.

Could she be a mix of non-Japanese 1 + non-Japanese 2?

Yuki Victoria is Italian, and does most of her work in Italy, she just seems to really love Japan and has spent a good amount of time over there(and learned the language), just her main work is in Italy though, but she constantly tweets in Italian, and Japanese with sometimes english

Then it seems that my theory stands, kind of.

Anri okita, maria ozawa, rio, rola takizawa, and reon kadena(non-av) are the ones i can think of now.
