SYNOPSIS:
Set in the turbulent postwar days in Japan, Osaka no yado creates a vivid image of the time and place. Full of poverty, unemployment and corruption it is also a time of rebuilding and renewal. Director Gosho gives us a protagonist who faces the dilemma of a good man in a bad world. A middle manager in a large company he gets demoted from head-office and sent to Osaka where he has to find lodging. This after a while he does in the titular inn. Here he comes into contact with people from all levels of society and his interactions with them gradually create the story. Gosho relates incidents from the lives of several individuals in an engaging look at one man trying to do what’s right in trying situations. Though this is set in a very particular time and place the human drama is timeless. This rather existential tale could have been penned by Camus or Sartre. A fine tale, well told in a good film.
