Synopsis: Shinzaburo flees an unwanted marriage with his brother's widow and lives quietly as a teacher distanced from his family. On the night of the summer Obon festival, he meets a beautiful courtesan named Otsuyu, whom he doesn't recognize as a ghost. But his interactions with her are leaving him weakened. Because she has a much more obviously ghostly attendant, Shinzaburo becomes frightened & visits Kiku, the temple priest, for an exorcism.

One of the darkest of Daiei's kaidan films from the late 60s is Yamamoto Satsuo's interpretation of "Botan Dorou" aka "The Bride From Hell".
More so than almost any other kaidan film I can think of, this film succeeds in genuinely creeping me out every time I watch it. Of course, every telling of the story deals with the necrophilic relationship of Shinzaburou with Otsuyu, but whereas later explicitly "pinku" works such as "Ai no Borei" depict their sexual encounters with relish, here it is only shown in glimpses, and those brief glimpses are horrific.
Shinzaburou's faithless servant and his wife provide the story's comic relief,

Very depressing, not recommended for viewing by children, but still an excellent film overall, and one of the most faithful adaptations of Otogi Boko's telling of the Peony Lantern tale.
