reposting dead torrents in order to get seeds?

Is this type of action in the best interest of AO? I came across a member who admited to posting a torrent (and apparently he has been accused of this before) without telling anyone it was a dead torrent. When questioned about it he said he was posting it in order to get seeds. WTF? I reported his post but maybe we should have an official or unofficial ruling on this.

Somehow this doesn't make sense to me: If there is someone seeding the movie that person is seeding it. And if someone has the movie, but doesn't seed it anymore because that person removed it from its torrent client, it will be hard to add it again just having the movie file and the torrent because all the other files which are shipped with it are missing.
In this case it would make more sense to re-share the movie by creating a new torrent file and posting this.
Or I'm wrong?

And in addition it is nonsense - like Ceewan already mentioned - because he didn't add any info that the torrent is dead and that he added it for the given purpose.

Actually you can reshare a torrent if you have the correct data (credit to Rubiks6):
Step 1
If you no longer have (or never had) the original .torrent file, download it from the original poster. In the 'File Download' applet that appears when you click on the .torrent attachment, you can choose between 'Run' and 'Save'. Choose 'Save', and navigate to the directory where data file(s) are. (The data files are the actual videos and/or picture files). When the download is complete (usually takes 1 or 2 seconds, even with a slow internet connection), Choose 'Open Folder'.
Step 2
Right-click on the .torrent file, and choose 'Properties' from the sub-menu. Highlight the value in the 'location' field (it usually scrolls, start on the left and pull your mouse hard to the right), right-click, and choose 'copy'. Close the 'Properties' applet.
Step 3
If you already have the .torrent file extension is associated with your torrent client software, click on the .torrent file.

Otherwise, right click on the .torrent file, and choose 'Open with ...' and choose or navigate to you torrent client software. (If see a check box that says something to the effect of 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file', check it).

An 'Add New Torrent' applet appears. In the 'Save As' text box, replace whatever value is in there with the 'location' value that you copied from step 2 (right-click and paste). Click 'Okay'. Edit - The file names that your torrent client is looking for must match the file names of the data files that you pointed to.

Yeah, I don't understand the concept myself of reposting dead torrents, unless you are adding spam to them. That was sometimes the case but not always here so I can't say for sure what the actual reasoning was. Most people just ask for a reseed on the original torrent.

if it starts becoming a major problem, then we will have to delve into this deeper

Yes, you can. But as you said: You have to have the right movie file. And as most of the torrents unfortunately also contain some extra files (infos about the group or guy which created the torrent) people won't be able to download 100%. So you would have to keep track of your torrents manually than just looking for the ones which are completed. Or you have to exclude the additional files from downloading each time manually.

Wow, thx for saving that...a little hard to read though, I am honored. And thx for finally replying to this thread, which you personally inspired.

I mentioned you in that post because I noticed you enjoyed (liked/thanked, whatever) isityours observation. Which is cool, isityours made a good catch. But I had asked for your input on an earlier instance of someone reposting dead torrents, at least one of those earlier reposts (that I also reported) was also filled with similar spam. I even mentioned that in my report to the mods. But I shouldn't have been the one to send the report to the mods. It should have been one of the longstanding and contributing members who had noticed that something was wrong in the first place. You and Isityours are both great members here, IMO, but when you notice trash posts like what inspired this thread, please report it to the mods.

It is okay that you don't like me, for whatever reason (I have nothing against you though, FYI). I can even take a little criticism, most of the time (or at least some of the time, lol). I can't be friends with everyone in the real world or even on the internet, that is just a part of life. I even accept that some people will hold grudges over my occasional emotional outbursts (and yes, I do have them from time to time), even if I forget about them and move on. I think often my anger over real life frustrations might inadverdently be voiced here, sry about that. I find it sad that some people hate me over my religious beliefs but that is going to happen too. I don't enjoy when they are insulting about it though, as if they are somehow better than the vast majority of the world population that practices some sort of religious beliefs. Nor do I believe that religious persecution should be allowed, on any moderated board, ever. It is as ugly as racism. Let us live and let live.

Happy Holidays to you CMoarIdols and thanks for posting in this thread. Your input is appreciated.

Sure, I'll have a nice day on that day, it doesn't bother me or affect me negatively in any larger way than the constant assumption that I also abuse my imagination(an insult to my intelligence) and that it is a holiday to me.

Awww, come on...it can't be that hard to insult your intelligence.

Seriously though, I have two brothers and one is a muslim ( I believe I have mentioned that elsewhere on this board) and one is an atheist. Believe it or not they are just as argumentitive as me. One thing we don't argue about howeer is religion. We are all set in our ways and we just know it isn't going to be an argument that will serve any purpose. So over the years we have just learned to respect each others rights to believe as we will. We are family and that is what is important. I celebrate Christmas and you celebrate a day off. So what? I have no problem being happy for you.

In the case of my Riko Kawanishi torrent I was just waiting a few weeks to see if the OP was or was not going to seed, they may have just had a slow upload =] Weeks, or months, later when the thread got bumped again I just had to speak up that day.

And you were right to do so and that is what started this thread. The most important fact though, was that a member was abusing his posting priviledges on this board and that was something the mods needed to be made aware of.

I am glad we are on the same page and hope we can work together to keep Akiba-Online free of trash posts like people posting dead torrents in order to get seeds (I still do not understand the logic of that) and people reposting others work in order to spread spam. A quality board takes a little effort from its' members, we can't expect the mods to do it all without our help.

Thank you for your commitment to a better Akiba-Online, your contributions have always been notable.
