So far as I know,*.dat files cannot be converted. Normally they are OS files so they are used from time to time by Windows without you knowing so, never set *.dat files to your default or any other player as your system may crash! What's happened is the original was not ripped but copied resulting in one or more *.dat files. Obviously the original copier didn't know what he was doing! VLC Player will play *.dat files provided you have suitable audio/video decoders installed that VLC Player recognises.
