SYNOPSIS/REVIEW:

Kei Kumai's Sandakan No.8 gives us the story of a young girl from a poor family in Japan who is sold to a broker who promises work in a foreign country. This work turns out to be forced prostitution. But the film reveals this story through a young female reporter who meets and draws the details out of the same woman many years later. Though the film gives a vivid picture of the exploitation and suffering of the Karayuki-san (the Japanese euphemism for the women sold into foreign prostitution.), it also portrays the developing relationship of the young reporter and the elderly woman. It is this part of the film that I find most impressive.

Few directors depict women and their personal relationships with such insight into inter-female emotional bonds as well as Kei Kumai. What starts as a tentative and cautious exchange slowly develops into a deep mother-daughter like closeness. This gradually evolving relationship is beautifully crafted by the director and his two fine actresses. Though the exposition of the plight of the karayuki-san is well made it is the growth of both women and their relationship that gives this story such depth and value.

Kumai is once again brilliant in his casting. Those of you who have seen Kumai's Shinobugawa will remember the talented and attractive Komaki Kurihara who played the lead. In this film she plays the young woman reporter. Kumai directs her to advantage opposite the much older Kinuyo Tanaka. The two characters are so different in age and experience and yet Kumai draws them together in a completely natural way.

Once can't say enough about Kinuyo Tanaka's work in this film. Kinuyo Tanaka as the elderly Osaki is simply magnificent. For this role she won Best Actress awards at the Berlin Intl. Film Festival, Kinema Junpo and Mainichi Film Concours. She brings such subtlty and nuance to her role, creating a totally beleivable and fully rounded personality. All the suffering and hardship as well as the courageous spirit to carry on, come through and yet without the slightest hint of overacting. This role by Tanaka is a tour de force, but considering her career it shouldn't be a surprise.

She was a favourite lead actresses of many of Japans greatest directors. She played the lead in many of Mizoguchi's films including The Life of Oharu and Sansho the Bailiff. She was also used as a leading lady by Keisuke Kinoshita in The Ballad of Narayama and Yotsuya kaidan, by Mikio Naruse in several films including Ginza Cosmetics and by Yasujiro Ozu in numerous films including The Munekata Sisters, Hen in the Wind and Equinox Flower. She also starred in Heinosuke Gosho's Where Chimneys are Seen. These few highlights from her illustrious career should leave no doubt as to her considerable talents, all of which she brings to bear in this superb role.

"A later example is the work of Kumai Kei, who came into international prominence with his Sandakan 8 (Sandakan hachiban shokan:Bokyo, 1974), a strong indictment of the Japanese wartime policy of providing "comfort women" for the imperial troops. One such woman, now old but still victimized (Tanaka Kinuyo), tells her sad story to a young reporter. (The only other director to make serious use of this subject was Imamura Shohei in his documentary, Karayuki-san: The Making of a Prostitute (Karayuki-san, 1973)"
