So there are some retirement rumors running around again, and with her next release being a compilation some are taking these rumors very seriously. This is her third retirement "scare" there where rumors last year about a retirement but seems it was mainly a contract dispute, and it was resolved, it might be the same issue now? Unsure myself on it, films are usually shot months in advance this compilation could mean her new scenes have dried up? Will see

lets wait and see

I wish she make hot orgy, interracial videos before she get retire

her duet or orgy with naomi, shiori kamisaki, aimi yoshikawa would be great I think

They waited so long to get her back, now they just seem to be throwing as many guys at her as possible! I still want to see her at least attempt a good story driven movie, though i think the producers realise her limitations, or for her to do either a shota movie or an elderly caregiver one. Just something different please.
Definitely what I'm waiting for.

She's definitely one of the most gorgeous / appealing women around in JAV for my tastes, but videos with just 'random fucking', or however one should put it, don't tend to do much for me.

Waiting on an interesting theme / genre entry, and while I understand why the theme doesn't appeal to everyone, I would definitely be into her doing an elderly caregiver film. When a gorgeous girl does one of those, the concept of young, truly beautiful girl vs. those old creeps...disgustingly hot?

I haven't always kept up with her, if she's done something in the stepfather area, do tell. As far as I know her stuff tends to be just vanilla, no?

I get the feeling, even if she was with another company, Rion wouldn't be willing to do more hardcore stuff anyways.

yup

thats why I'm hoping she will move

she would be the same or better

we have some examples vanilla girls became more hardcore after they moved to other studio or became freelancer ;)

which examples are there? A top tier vanilla girl going more "hardcore"

Well this conversation could easily devolve into unpleasant argument over phraselogy.

There are plenty of examples for top tier vanilla girl coming "down to earth" and have a standard AV career which covers both vanilla all-sex vids (e.g. soap) and more elaborate "production" vids, orgy, fan fest, bukkake, IR, bondage, even anal. A perfect, current example is Aimi Yoshikawa, she started out as a busty vanilla girl for TEAM and then STAR. I was a huge fan despite I am usually slow to warm up to any new girl. And then I started to get bored about her, extremely similar to Rion, Aimi has an amazing figure but was doing only boring vanilla vids. And then while I wasn't looking, she started appearing in many different labels and doing many genres. Most especially she made a bunch of bondage and S&M vids. Also she's in a lot of 3P/4P/group sex/harem/orgy vids, sharing the scene with another idol is beneath a top-tier idol. (see, Julia only shared scene twice since 2013)

I think the current persona of Rion is just not going to survive very long in the market. I don't think ANY top tier vanilla girl can have a long career if she remains vanilla. No matter how beautiful her face and/or figure is, the freshness wears off. Girls like Rion take one of two paths, (1) become a regular AV professional, make whatever genre/theme that market wants, or (2) retire. Right now she's still young enough she can marry some rich businessman or geek or yakuza and have no worries for the rest of her life. Every year we see at least 5 idols in this category: very beautiful, very young (recently more common to see slightly older girls) make between 3 to 10 high profile vids for some top labels and quietly disappear, from hot new star to forgotten in less than 2 years. My guess is their income per vid slips downward since the freshness wears off, so they are asked to do more "interesting" vid and they say "Nah, I'm not a career porn star".

Rion already took a third path, only she can do it because she's so amazing (bOObs!!!). She rebooted her career under a new name, but keeping the exact same persona!! If the Chinese article can be believed then the studio is already facing a crisis: this vanilla girl persona isn't making mega hits anymore. Compared to other super high profile idols like Shoko Takahashi and Yua Mikami, there's something missing in Rion, know what I mean?? I hope she can become a standard S-class idol, like Julia or Ayumi Shinoda. But I can also imagine she will retire in 2017.

Aimi started out with STAR followed the typical STAR progression(not really vanilla) then joined TEAM and became full Vanilla, and S1S1 before leaving the Vanilla world, I think she could've legit been top tier if it wasn't for her stint at TEAM, then S1S1 so early in her career.

Rion though, she's a "special attraction" and she keeps making S1S1 a lot of money, if she sticks there she will stay pretty popular, I think with her the specialty goes away if she goes and she just becomes one of the other girls. All indications over the years is that she never really had any interest in the industry just the money, so I see her staying Vanilla and getting paid or retiring, which is a rumor going around that she already might be retiring.

Also what do you think about Shoko, and Yua? two other girls that came in with big hype and a good following.

Actually I think both Yua and Shouko are where Rion/Shion was about a year into their careers- massive hype as "premium" av idols. Hard to say if they will remain where they are if they keep doing what they're doing. Though I would also disagree that you either have to become mainstream or retire. That is most often the case, yes, but every so often there's an exception like Kirara Asuka who debuted a decade ago and can remain on S1 doing relatively normal shit on a big label; it's certainly possible if you get big enough. I think both Ri0n and Yua could probably do something like that (not a decade, Kirara is probably unique in that sense), but could conceivably go a couple years with S1 or a different premium label. I think it's far more likely that both eventually retire though; Yua has been getting non-AV offers so I could see her quitting AV if she can sustain herself on those; Rion has never seemed to care about av outside the money and will probably retire sooner rather than later.

Hmm here we go, wading chest-deep into semantic quagmire...

To me, Kirara Asuka is another perfect example of what I call standard AV career or what you call "mainstream", sure she's not doing enema or bukkake but she's nowhere near vanilla as Rion is now (and always been). Now maybe you would disagree with me... but seems to me Kirara is even more "down to earth" than Julia. Put it this way, if Rion can follow Kirara's career track and stay with S1 for few more years, I would be happy enough.

Problem is that Rion seems to be unable or unwilling to commit to the standard top idol career. It's showing in her work, and I suspect it's starting to affect profits (especially it seems her average production cost is higher than the typical top idols). She's milked (ahem) her amazing asset for 3.5 years and she's now still at the same point other fresh faces+good figures after about 1 year. I'm predict a noticeable change in her career within 6 months. Either mainstream or retire. (but then ... what would she do? She already unretired once, why did she do that? If she can't figure out an exit strategy it may end up badly for her)

As for Yua. I think there's a chance (maybe a small chance) Yua will turn out to be a groundbreaking, genre-bridging superstar. She was not talented and disciplined enough to be successful in AKB48, and in AV at best she would be another Yuma Asami. But perhaps she can bridge the two that happens not even once a decade. Maybe she can make regular appearances in small TV roles and other celeb jobs while keep making "classy"/"vanilla" AV. The AV lends her sensational cred in the non-adult media circle (but can't do any hardcore) and her ongoing non-adult celeb status is needed to keep her AV sales (and her own income) sky high. A wet dream perhaps, but I think she's unique and has what it takes.

A more reliable fallback, my wishful thinking: she becomes Yuma Asami: one vid per month, top idol with strong professional altitude and acting skills. Bad scenario: she can't figure out what to do with her life nor learn to be content with what she has, end up in drugs, prostitution, debt and prison.

Shoko: it's too early to tell, she can follow any of the typical career paths we already discussed. Compared to everyone else, she's still fresh enough (only 9 months) that she can do vanilla for a little while longer.

agree with ding, Aimi Yoshikawa is one of them that I almost lost hope, super hot face & body but boring performances, never expected she could be better, but luckly she leave STAR and Team Zero, she improving a lot after became freelancer

Honoka Orihara formerly known as Mizuki Akai with E Body, she not very famous and not top tier, but she improve a lot after comeback as freelance and use new stage name

Shiori Kamisaki, like Rion she was having diva syndrome at KMP, and now with Moodyz she not improve a lot, but at least I feel she have better performances

yes

fortunately she made it right by get out from her comfort zone

the question is like ding's wrote for how long before viewers start to get bore

if the girls have fantastic physical appearence like Rion, Maria Ozawa, Julia they can survive longer in vanilla mode, but not very long

yeah that the biggest possibility, seems she prefer to get retire than goes hardcore :(

Shoko Mikami ?

yes, there are some other famous girls who jumping ships and keep doing the same till they retired, ex : Tina Yuzuki

it would be another unfortunate case if Rion decide to get retire before she do some real hardcore performances :(

^ I don't agree that Aimi was ever a top vanilla girl SOD had a systetm, but she was not doing all vanilla stuff until she left them, but she was still never a top girl, just A girl.

so there are no top vanilla girl who turn to "the dark side" ?

I agree it's mostly a semantic argument but I don't think that Kirara's movies with S1 have been any more "normal" than Rion's. They've both done bondage, some light molestor shit. There's a couple themes Kirara's done that Rion hasn't yet, but those don't seem any more "normal", I'd chalk it up to her being on the label for longer and needing to go to different ideas as a result.

Well problem is, we all agree, Rion is "special". I call her porcelain, or rubber sex doll. Papa calls her vanilla girl. Comparing anyone to her could be problematic.

If you compare Kirara with other top idols, I don't see anything special about her, especially I don't see the studio give her special treatment, major production or extra promotion or fanfare. She's a top girl, so she doesn't do anything too hardcore or nasty or low brow. But there are a few girls with the same status. Julia, Shunka Ayami, and recently retired Ayumi Shinoda, Anri Okita. And my avatar Takao Kitahara, long retired. You know in certain ways Takao and Rion are similar: beautiful glamorous face (slight edge to Takao), gorgeous supple figure (Rion's tits got the edge) and most important both have that divine, not-of-this-earth Goddess air about them. But every vid of Takao was great, from debut to retirement. With Rion, every vid was like "ok good, but maybe nice one will be better(?)"

Sure I might wish they at least dabble in something fringe. Like... Julia as superheroine... (OMG almost had an accident there)

Anyway these girls are all in a top idol category, they are gorgeous enough to say no to many genre, they rarely perform in a scene shared with other girls. Kirara is no different. Well at least I think so, I am not a fan of hers and don't particularly follow her works, you are welcome to prove me wrong.

But Rion isn't even performing as expected in this class. After 3.5 years, every new vid she still perform like it's her second or third time in AV. And studio is still giving her special treatment, SNIS-774 and SNIS-824 probably costed the studio tons of money to produce. Is her sales good enough to justify being a higher-than-top category?
