17岁的夏天，正处于青春期的朋代(小岛可奈子饰演)爱上了新津雄介(石田一成饰演)，然而雄介喜欢的人却是朋代的妹妹愁子(佐藤蓝子饰演)。多年后，雄介如愿娶了愁子，朋代只好将这段暗恋之情藏于心中。但婚后没多久，三十六岁的愁子便因为患乳腺癌而死去。
临终前，愁子告知丈夫自己最后的愿望：将她的骨灰做成一把美丽的瓷壶。雄介遵循妻子的遗愿，做完瓷壶并将之安放于自己的身边。然而就像愁子的香魂从此注入了壶一般，白色的壶身上偶尔会出现朱红色的伤痕，仿佛愁子的眼泪--水壶因此被称为“泪壶”。愁子死后，朋代那尘封了二十年多年的感情复苏，再次爱上雄介，但每次看到妹妹的瓷壶，朋代总觉得对不起....
