online sources or retail?

If you are a beginner, the Windows Movie Maker would do.
If you want a little step up, use Sony Vegas.
If you are pro, use Adobe Premiere.

I don't edit any of the videos I get from here but if I had too, I have Sony Vegas Pro 9. At first I had a pirate copy but when I started filming birthday parties, weddings, etc and making money I bought the legit version to keep myself out of trouble .... paid almost $600 for that piece of software and at times it crashes and in my opinion is not even worth the money I spent, its powerful but very touchy and picky.

Strangely there isn't really a "single" program to handle all the video editing.

Have to use about 4+ different ones for each file type.

Not to mention running into strange codecs or badly encoded ones and needing yet another program.

free

like pixelious said Windows Movie Maker. It came with Win XP. If it crashes at first, tweak the audio codecs. I love it when it works right. I can mix mp3 ringtones with it and edit out lame dvd soundtracks,
For mkv the mkvmerge GUI works without visuals. just add timestamps in like 00:01:22,00:55:01, and it takes 2 minutes to chop up a whole dvd. It does mp4's too but the are left as mkv files.
Boilsoft maybe has the easiest, called the AVI MPEG ASF WMV Splitter. Works great for editing out the Candydoll intros:)
I have to keep many handy, though, the way new codecs show up.
When I need something new, I set a restore point, jic, and search for apps and progs on download.com. include 'free' in your search then make sure there are no restrictions on free use.

First thing I do is use KLcodec Pack http://www.codecguide.com/

And then I use VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/

Its possible to edit ANY video with Virtualdub. Just make sure when you install KLCodec pack that you select "Lots Of Stuff" and this will install the Codecs for Encoding.

Its believed by many that Virtualdub cannot edit WMV/MP4 and ASF, This is rubbish. All you need to do is configure FFSHOW correctly (Its installed with KLcodecs) All you do is load up FFSHOW-VFW Interface (Its in the Configuration menu of KLcodec Packs start menu)

Now if theres a particular thing that Virtualdub wont load like WMV then from FFSHOW VFW interface select DECODER Tab at the top and then highlight Codecs. Now look for the codec that wont load and WMV will probably be WMV 3/9 and so on. It will have disabled next to it. Click where it says disabled and select Libavcodec for all the WMV types.

Now click apply and OK. Fire up virtualdub and enjoy editing WMV from within it :)

Handy Little Hack I worked out.

Moxy!

After I almost slandered Virtual-dub in my post, I gave it 3 more trys, mainly because the couple times it worked, ( years ago) it was very accurate and easy with the big double display. So i dropped 1, 2, and a 3rd file in, error every time. has no frames, etc. Oh well. Then the rain came and washed away the mud. I've used the klc-pack always. Never had to do nothing with it after installing an update. Who could have known that you have to sneak in the back-door and turn on the lights like that? There could be only one man, Moxy, your that man. I can't be mad at klc for the universe of choices it provided for free, but why not have the default during install, be set to 'on!? Were they ready to go at first, then other programs claimed them? Like IE crys over when it's ( not your default browser?)
Thank you for the easy directions. After I clicked around the source in program files,
I remembered, Hey doosh! it's right there on your start menu!
Done and Done
Now I wonder if my favorite picture editor can be helped. Picture Publisher from Win95. No updates ever, But I know this program and can do good things, but it's pretty f'd up when it won't open a jpg that it just made! I have to open w/ Irfan, copy, paste as new image or save it as a bmp.

Let me try to help some some new user, maybe. Whenever you start a new file, watch the size carefully. A movie file with no filters can bang out 2 gigs for a few seconds of duration.
Your room will be free-of-charge tonight 8)

What you have to remember with Vdub is that its Free and due to it being free there's a lot of licences to edit video it does not have. It used to do ASF/WMV but the whores MS made them remove it. You can get Virtual Dub Mod as stated before but IMHO its not needed if you use FFDshow with Vdub.

I like Vdub cause it does simple tasks well like Re-encoding with more options as opposed to the 1-click solutions + you can join Avi wrapper files split into 2 without re-encoding. Also its great for the simple cut/paste edit.

I have used Vdub for years and use Premier for more advanced editing ofc, Both worth there salt but Vdub is about £500 less :)

@scorres

With KLCP. The reason it defaults to just playback is because thats what most people use it for. Selecting lots of things adds FFDshow and all the Encoders needed to save or re-encode video. FFDshow basically can play every video format with out a codec (Bet you didn't know that :) ). All it does is takes over the decoding from Virtualdub and essentially tricking Vdub into loading WMV.

On the flip side. FFDshow can cause issues with lots of games and various other stuff so I would advice to anyone to load its option up from either its Start Menu option (If you installed without KLCP) or From KLCodec Packs configuration menu option.

Now from there select DirectShow Configuration/control on the left pane. See on the right where it says: Use FFDshow only in selected programs and Dont use FFDshow in select programs.

I suggest that people tick: Use FFDshow only in - And select the programs they want it to use like Virtualdub/MPC (Media Player Classic) and so on, This is the most safe way of using it.

All you have to do is select the program you want to use it in from the window that opens when you click edit at the side of where you ticked the last option.

If you only wish to playback video without installing many codecs and want a player that can play videos without codecs/broken video/bad seek/stream video then can I suggest getting VideoLan and its free.

http://www.videolan.org/

EDIT: You may want to do the same for FFDshows Audio options too. Its the same process but instead of loading the video options you load the Audio OFC :)

Good luck and if anyone has any questions on anything like this then just PM me and I will be glad to help.

I like VDub because of speed, less system resources, works with all codecs and can even re-render "broken" downloads if need be.

There is in my opinion only two options for vdub.

Simple version
VirtualDubMod_1_5_10_1_All_inclusive

You don't have to worry about sound and all as its all inclusive

More control
VirtualDub-MPEG2-AC3

Gives you additional control over sound, which you have in the first one too but you need to set it for each video encoded here.

They also work fine with VOB files and any other format known to man. (except ASF/WMV as usual)

Add VobSub to support hard encoding subtitle files and more graphics overlay, karaoke edits and what have you not.
