Depends on the NAS, how many bays (means room for HDDs) you want to have and how many HDDs you put in there and what kind of HDDs you put in there. An 2 bay NAS starts at maybe $50 (e.g. Zyxel). Then you have to add at least one HDD. I wouldn't buy Zyxel because I want to have quality. But it shows that it isn't that expensive (anymore). QNAP or Synologic are more expensive, of course.Isn't it a bit expensive to buy those NAS?
In my case I wouldn't store them there because I don't want to have anything in the root of my system drive. But basically you can put it wherever you want.Usually, I store the videos in the folder, C:\Downloads. I'm just curious which folder, where people usually keep their private stuffs.
In case of a crash or a defect I would recommend a backup to an external drive (e.g. USB drive). That also applies to a NAS - even if you use a RAID.It is advised to keep files on external drives, for security reasons (in case of a HD/C crash), and for privacy too (unless you live alone ).

Only to keep files on an external drive won't add any benefit: If the external drives crashes - and that is more likely as it really can crash down from your desk while your PC doesn't in most cases. - the data is also lost.
Okay, privacy is a point. In this cases I recommend different user profiles with password protection and a NAS with a users management and password protected shares (means network folders / drives).
Sorry, I didn't recognize the plural. It was written "on external drives" (plural), not on 1 external drive dear CodeGeek
Yes, that's true. That's why I also recommend to make backups of the NAS - which I point out. With the NAS solution, if the house burns, is hit by a typhoon, earthquake, all is gone
I thought it is about privacy in aspect of other families members and / or roomates. In this case this is a little bit other the top. Okay, maybe if that room is a student of computer sciences and / or a computer geek.Privacy: I recommend encrypted OS, the use of TrueCrypt (version 7.1a), DiskCryptor, etc., but that's may be too much
