It seems they have a contract for 3-5 films and just decided to leave after fulfilling it. Many of them return because the money is too good and easy to make, so don't give up your hopes just yet.

Rio Kitajima otherwise known as Erine Kurosawa has possibly my favourite face in the business. When I try to search for her films there are about 200 over results, however I estimate less than 30 are originals, and in a number among these she only has a few scenes as part of an ensemble. A decent library, but I had hoped she'd rocket past 3 digits. Despite her angelic looks I gotta say her performances and films are often pretty ordinary, thus she was not as popular as I'd hoped.

Another one is Sakura Sakurada. Her CV is really short and seems to comprise of a lot of lesbian stuff...which sucks. She's done some incredible work, I remember one vid where she casually allows a number of men to cum inside her and she keeps it in for the next guy before letting them out all at once. I always wanted to see her in action with stuff of more range, but in later vids she's usually the dominatrix supporting character who doesn't even take her clothes off:(

Indeed... it's a category that IMHO lacks recognition. So hereby, on Akiba-Online, I propose to recognize these JAV performers as a distinct group, and further I propose to label them Pro-Am (professional amateur) or Semi-Pro.

The precise categorization is:

1. Pro: a performer who have made at least 8 (?) solo-vids "单体作品" (solo refers to single female performer, it doesn't refer to masturbation) [it's even tempting to lower the threshold to 6, I seem to find that once a girl has made 6 JAV's, she's very likely to go on to make tens of JAV)

2. Amateur: a performer who (usually) doesn't headline a solo-vid, she may only ever appear in a single JAV, or she might have appeared in over a hundred. Either way if she doesn't headline a JAV, she's amateur.

3. Semi-Pro: a performer who made between 1 and 7 solo-JAVs and then disappear from the JAV industry.

Of course as for any categorization system, there are exceptions, cross-overs and gray areas. But I think these 3 category does serve the JAV scene well.

There are a small number (tens?) of pro stars who make a significant portion of JAV, these have typically a "classy" looking cover with the performer's photo taking up most of the cover and her (pseudo)-name in large font. Many of these pros, during at least some portion of their career, release films on a once-a-month pace. That's not counting compilation vids which may further inflate her output rate. One prominent example is Julia, Blessed Be Her Bouncy Bosom, who have been release all-new solo-JAVs at a precise biweekly schedule for well over a year.

Then there are a large number of amateur (at least hundreds?) who make another significant portion of JAV (perhaps more releases per month than the pros). Those covers tends to be less "classy" and composed of lots of images (frames).

Finally each month if you look at the new solo-JAV "单体作品" (or check the covers with a large "classy" single performer photo and large font for her name), quite a number of them are of "new" or "newish" girls and if you follow these girls career, some of them will make a handful of JAV's during a "lazy" schedule of 12-24 months and then quietly disappear from the AV industry.

Compared to the amateurs these girls are hot enough (in face and/or body) or maybe some kind of minor celebrity status (e.g. athlete or musician) so they can command a whole AV vid, but end up deciding not to dive into a full career. From what we can gather these girls don't deviate too far from their "normal" career/life path, only made some easy money doing porn and seemingly "melt" back into mainstream society.

It would be an interesting exercise: go back to say 2012, take all the girls who have made at least one "单体作品" from that year and see how many of those girls are still releasing "单体作品" in 2015, I'd bet 50 cents the ratio is well under 50%. And most of these have not made 8 JAV's in their whole career before disappearing.

As much as I enjoy seeing and reading different and interesting topics there are a few that seem to be started without anyone thinking about what they are posting. Now I truly appreciate the kindness other members were in their previous responses, they were kind, informative and interesting to read. However.....did you really think about this? At all? Do you imagine that if you were a young girl that your deepest desire would be to be a pornstar where you would get to fuck a lot of strange men, on camera, for anyone with the price of the DVD could watch? Did you truly consider that this just might not be a preferred job choice by most women?

Now there is enough rumor that there probably is more fact than fiction involved that the JAV industry is mostly run by the Yakuza and they are not unknown to, in Japan and in other countries, contract women into doing porn to pay off debt that is owed them.

Very likely some females do JAV just to make a quick Yen and then leave the industry as soon as possible. This is pretty common in most countries and in the sex industry as a whole.

Lastly, some girls just may have decided they just preferred to do something else, or maybe even anything else, to make a living.

Now... to be fair. This question is non-obvious at all. I've watched US porn, Euro porn and JAV since the 80s. And "semi-pro" is unimaginable to the English-speaking world (which Akiba Online belongs to), or even most of the world. Either you are pro and your whole life would be branded human trash by mainstream society. Or you are amateur and you hope to stay low profile enough that it doesn't impact your life too much. Without a name, without even a pseudonym, an amateur may hope to help the customer jerk off without leaving any lasting impression.

But a semi-pro, that's hard to understand for most of the world. Your face would be on the DVD cover that even a non-paying non-customer can see and maybe recognize in real life. You are beautiful or special enough to be put on a high profile promotion by the AV studio but then you quit and (presumably) return to "normal" life. It can only happen in Japan and maybe a couple (nearly bankrupt?) Eastern European countries.

I've been watching JAV since mid-90s and only very recently, after first following some top stars for some years until they all retire, and then I had to "discover" new talent and found that it's really not easy to find a replacement for Takako Kitahara, Mario Ozawa, Yuma Asami: girls who are hot, good performer AND hard working (at least 6 AV's a year). I would "discover" a girl I like, tried to follow her, but waited months and months. It's almost like stalking a girl who's not going to be yours, it's quite painful actually.

After scrapping all the bits of (pseudo)-news, blogs (those by the performers help a lot), data-mining DMM, Sougouwiki etc for performer's data that finally this idea of semi-pro forms in my mind.

the first seven don't count... i like that.
Well of course it counts... Semi-pros are probably a very important part of the whole JAV experience.

Personally I have very little interest in amateurs. When I watch porn, I am not looking for a "realistic" woman, I want to see hot goddesses and crazed sluts. Amateurs are mostly not very hot nor very excellent fuckers.

So top stars are top choices... fine... but also one likes some variety. So semi-pro fills the gap, and it's a unique feature of JAV. They are hot enough to match the top stars (more in looks than in performance) and yet there are so many fresh faces every year.

Also add that component of yakuza and debt. Likely these girls aren't wholly truly willing to get fucked by multiple strangers and mental subject of thousands of masturbating men. When I watch these JAVs, sometimes I imagine these girls going to school or work the next day with a sore pussy or still tasting the foulness of so many cocks, for what? To pay for luxury handbags? The new iPhone? Or she's help her little brother pay tuition? Or even, like in one standard theme, pay off her husband gambling debt???

The whole idea is so titillating. That a woman, almost any woman, can be put into a situation she make an AV.

I don't think you have watched as much western porn as you think. But I do admit there are several differences between western porn and JAV. Solo performances are pretty rare in western porn but many "co-stars" only do AV for a year or less and often do more than 7 films. Look more closely into the cast of almost any western porn you have seen that you can find here:

iafd.com

I honestly don't watch a lot of porn nowadays. It is only an occasional weakness for me. That wasn't always the case though. I have seen many amateurs rise to be bigtime stars ( In the original "Dirty Debutante" series in particular, the series which redefined amateur porn in America).

I find women being forced into porn not to be a turn on. I find it disgusting and abonimable. I don't hold it against you or anyone else for how they feel though, it is just my personal feelings on the subject. People shouldn't be treated like meat, no matter what their sex is. I have been hungry and homeless before and I know that it will drive people to do things they would not normally consider, especially if there is nowhere and no one to turn to. I see that as a poor reflection on society in general. If it turns you on, well, that is your own affair.

Indeed, I have not followed US porn for maybe 15 years and even Euro porn I've stopped watching for maybe 8 years. I do get what you say. There are a lot more "starlets" in US porn nowadays. And Euro porn had always have a steady stream of Eastern European girls.

A main reason I've stopped watching porn is that these starlets are less and less super-hot looking and more average than the "good old days". At the same time, they also feel so trashy.

The pros and semi-pros in JAV are both hot and classy, or at least non-trashy. That's quite important.

I find women being forced into porn not to be a turn on. I find it disgusting and abonimable. ... If it turns you on, well, that is your own affair.

Ah yes... it was easy to misunderstand.

Short response is: precisely in JAV you don't get the feeling the women are forced into it. That's a fine but important line. The stereotypical impression of prostitution in most of the world is that a girl have fallen into a bad situation, often drug addiction and forced into selling her body. I'm totally with you on this, it's abominable. But what I read from some articles in the 90s (back when Japan economy was soaring) is that a large fraction of high school and university girls do it casually, as supplementary cash. To pay for fancy accessory, cosmetic and (later) tech gadgets such as cell phone. They are in control and can enter and leave the "industry" freely and it doesn't affect their life planning such as education, work and family life.

That's a curious psychological effect when I was walking the streets, especially in Shibuya where thousands of young girls each wearing accessories more expensive than my digital camera. I worked a side job for a full 3 months to afford that camera and it was mindblowing to see that much luxury accessories walking the streets. And then you look at the girls again and realize more than half of them also work a side job (just a different nature than mine) to pay for them. By one article at least one third of big city girls have made money from some kind of sexual contacts such as handjobs. That makes people watching in Tokyo quite a different experience. Notice a girl with too expensive stuffs on her? She probably sucked quite a few cocks for it.

So that's the fine line. Doing AV's not something you would be proud of or advertise to the world. But it's also not the "treat as meat" kind of humiliation. Kind of like all actors and actresses have worked waiting tables at restaurants. Everyone might have a need for cash at some time. So just do a few AV's.

And that's exactly why JAV doesn't feel trashy, despite (as you correctly stated) Western porn now also has a lot of semi-pros. The JAV industry doesn't treat the women as meat or trash and that fact shows through in the vids.

So... yeah the previous post might be easy to misunderstand. So you can un-misjudge me, despite you claim not to, but you did. That's alright. ;)

Nah bro, I didn't really judge you, not my job. The subject came up at a bad time though, I had recently heard about the "Bakky Visual" afffair and downloaded the vids to see what the fuss was about. I had never seen a real r*** vid before. I thought maybe they just overdid it or something, crossed a line, did a little more with the actress than she had agreed to. But no, it was some disgusting stuff. The producer and some of his staff were sentenced to 18 years and some of the actors 13 years. I think they got off way too lightly. Worse, some of the actors involved weren't charged at all and are still in the buisiness. So I deleted that crap after taking a look at it, couldn't get through one vid, not even close. To my shame I scanned all of them but I couldn't believe what I was seeing, that people would really treat other human beings like that. The term "hate crime" is overused in my country but that is exactly what these vids were. I am proud that Chompy banned anything from those deplorable excuses for human beings from this site. At first I thought 18 years to light of a sentence and life in prison would have been too harsh (which is what they would have got in the States) but after digesting what I saw.....I would have fucking killed those bastards. The death penalty seems fitting here. Keelhauling them to death perhaps the most appropriate. Out of my hands though, thankfully those are choices I don't have to make.

I am sure 99% percent of JAV is at least somewhat professional in their dealings, same for the AV industry as a whole. That 1% though......abominable and a black mark on humanity.

So no, I wasn't judging you at all. Myself.....maybe.....but you? nope, not over something as trivial as a little fantasy.

usually because they don't want to work in the industry any further, so after they done short contract for 1-3 films they decided to quit & refuse for another offers

the reasons why they stop : feels not comfortable, think the money not good enough compare to sacrifices, bad relationship with family or get married with rich man

I have long list JAV female performers that I wish they would done more films, some of them are : Chiharu Nakasaki, Ai Nikaido, Yuzu Ogura, a girl from SOD cinderella that I forget her name
