I think the legal problems exist more with shipping the DVD *into* some countries than with sending them out of Japan. For instance, it's illegal to import r*** porn into Australia, some countries have laws against porn where the actresses pretend to be or seem to be underage, even if they're actually over 18, in some countries *all* porn is illegal...
My understanding is that most JAV companies don't want the hassle of finding out which movies are allowed where so they solve it by not sending any movies anywhere.

The problem isn't the DRM as such for most people, but the fact that you have to use their video player. This is a recent development both on R18 and on DMM, you didn't have to in the past.

They should just give the option to download a movie with DRM that will play in (for example) windows media player or something else. I'm sure there are enough players out there that can actually handle DRMed files.

Of course it would be even better if they gave up on DRM like the rest of the world, but since that's not about to happen they should at least look into the player option.

As Explained here before. Making the R/DMM Player mandatory is not something that we like to do, at the end it is development expenses for us.
At the beginning the R/DMM Player was made to help mac users to play the videos as they do not have WMP.

Now with Microsoft dropping the support we were forced to support all windows users with R/DMM Player.

Believeme if VLC or some other good player were able to open DRM files then it will be much easier for us. We will not need to develop and support any extra player.

Now if you can suggest any good Player already our there that supports DRM we will listen and see if we can make it work.

R/DMM Player is not great at this moment. We are aware of it and we are trying to improve. It seems Silverlight and some Graphic cards have incompatibility problems. If you search you can find that Netflix and Amazon had problems in the past also with the compatibility of Silverlight and some graphic cards.
We are still investigating the best way to fix this.

Any plans for a working android / linux rplayer?
The BBC iplayer seems to have got it right for multiple platforms with DRM as much as I detest it.

as previously stated. Put a stop to the DRM. You bring money to these studios. If you were not offering to sell these products for them they would not be able to reach the whole market. So YOU should be calling the shots. Stand up for your customers and make the studios end the DRM or they will lose money they easily could have made. There are other sites selling some of the movies you have and they are DRM free. They don't have anywhere near the collection as you but it can be done. Or maybe we all just boycott any site that doesn't fight for our right to own stuff we buy. When the studios see zero sales for their movies maybe they will get it.

Since a lot of members are voicing their opinions/suggestions towards R18 about making the studios drop DRM, it is probably a good idea to bring to light for them ( and as a reminder to others that know ) that DMM (the parent company of R18) in fact OWNS many of the production companies that produce the titles on the site. Captain Bondage, himself, said as much replying to questions from our very own jugulear (found HERE). So for all intents and purposes, DMM is calling the shots, not the other way around. They are not about to ask/demand from their companies or themselves decide to offer their content sans DRM because of outcry from the likes of us. LOL

The studios will never (never) [never] {NEVER} see zero sales because we don't buy from them because WE are not their primary market. In terms of absolute sheer quantity of content never before available to us (arguably) we have been thrown a bone. It's a DRM-wrapped bone, to be sure. Take it or leave it. It's laughable that a handful of members on a file sharing site would be able to bend a major corporation into doing anything. If you are HERE on this site trying to reach them you're now in the negative percentages for chances to make a dent.

The Captain has said at least once before that their company does well. R18 wasn't created because of "customer demand" from file sharing sites. It is a venture to try and capture a bit more yen.

I just cancelled my membership at R18. My three other friends are not going to renew their membership when it expires. Having DRM is bad and annoying enough, but to be forced to use a proprietary player, that is where we draw the line. We will happily return when they switch back to letting us decide which player to use.

'Ello,

Reason why this thread got started (how to access DMM from other countries, USA in my case) has now become a memory, so I'm not expecting a solution... now that minds are on other things in regards to DMM. Yet it can't hurt to ask... I suppose.

Got a new computer, and with that came the latest version of Firefox (in my previous computer, I was happy with an older version, because an add-on I liked wouldn't work with the newer versions). I followed the great tips presented on the first couple of pages of this thread (I would recommend outside-of-Japan members to make a note of these instructions, in case Akiba-Online has access problems), ditch the cookies, add the suggested lines to Adblock, and yakkity-yak.

Now I can't click on anything within the DMM page. (I can't get the cursor to appear either, in the search bar - so it's more than just not being able to click.) There are some help pages out there in regards to non-clickability in Firefox, but these mostly address the problem with all sites. I have no problem with any other site; just DMM.

I followed the instructions for Chrome, and that's what I've been using when I visit DMM, but I prefer Firefox. Any ideas on how Firefox may get responsive with DMM again?

Thanks.

EDIT: Ain't that grand of Codegeek to look into the problem? Much appreciated, CG. In case of confusion, I did get Firefox to access DMM, and got rid of that welcome sign that gives the English-Japanese choice. It's just that once I'm in DMM, and able to travel around freely, I can't click on or write anything. I suspect, perhaps, there is something in Adblock that may be getting in the way -- and when it comes to Adblock, I'm a blockhead.

.
Okay, jugulear, I tried the instructions I wrote here and I have to say: It works perfectly.
I tested it with a fresh portable version of Firefox v39.0 (English). I used Adblock Plus v2.6.9.1-signed and Stylish 2.0.2.1-signed.

I experienced the same thing when I did step 1 of my instrictions: I freshly installed Firefox doesn't show anymore that Welcome layer. Instead you can't do anything on that site: No clicking, no typing.
So I recommend to simply follow my instructions. If that doesn't work, please, post again. :)

By now, the world has no doubt become aware of "Gentleman" Codegeek, but now I am worried he may become known as Saint Codegeek!

Codegeek has helped me many, many times during my stay here on Akiba-Online, and most of you have probably noticed he does not treat me as special (damn that Codegeek), but lends a helping hand to everyone.

Thank you very much, Codegeek. And I am especially touched that you went the extra mile, by spending time on the testing that you conducted.

What you did not make clear, or more correctly, what I did not understand very well, was that after you followed the first step of your instructions, you managed to get rid of the Welcome screen, but... you discovered that "you can't do anything on that site: No clicking, no typing," that is, the problem I have faced? So this problem is one that you have also encountered? I WONDER NOW MORE THAN EVER WHY THAT SHOULD HAPPEN! (I mean, I don't expect an answer, but since it's not just my problem... well... it's weird.)

Shame on me for not having faith in getting an answer here, so soon after I posted, I PM'ed the man who provided the answers in the first two pages of this thread, Javhoarder. Since he's no longer a regular visitor, I was lucky to catch him, and I have to say he was extremely gracious with his response. He also went through a lot of trouble testing things out, and I felt very indebted to him. A fine, fine fellow, indeed.

His main recommendation was the same, to give Firefox Portable a crack. Now, I shuddered at the thought of the alternative, which most likely would have entailed uninstalling and reinstalling regular Firefox (which meant trouble); I also wasn't crazy about installing the portable version, because I wanted my regular Firefox to access DMM. (In other words, it sounded like a real pain to exit Firefox just because I felt like visiting DMM.)

But I conducted some brief research, and found a way to make both Firefox and Portable FF co-exist. Then I figured, okay, whenever I want to visit DMM, I would just need to click on my Portable FF shortcut, and that didn't sound too bad.

Thank you in bundles, Codegeek. It worked. (And although I have already expressed my gratitude to Javhoarder in private, I'd like to arigato him here, as well.)

Codegeek, I have a suggestion or two about your instructions, which you may (or may not) feel worthy of an edit.

At the beginning, you suggested installing both "Adblock Plus" and "Stylish"; it's really one or the other, both needn't be installed. (Indeed, with Portable FF, I just went with Stylish.) You then went on to provide what needed to be done with Stylish, without mentioning Adblock Plus again. Perhaps you may want to stress it's either-or, and then add that for Adblock Plus, filters would be needed per the discussion on Page Two.

Secondly, in my blessed stupidity as far as Stylish, I followed your directive to "Copy the following in the big text area" ... although I wondered why the beginning "Code:" was in a different color (tipping me off that maybe that was your helpful way of identifying what was underneath). Including "Code": did not make DMM behave. I then visited Javhoarder's recommendation, and noticed the word "Code:" was excluded. I got rid of the "Code:" and then I was in business. (So although it may be painful... after all, that precious word is part of your moniker... perhaps you may choose to get rid of the "Code:.")

Once again, a big hat's off to SAINT Codegeek!

Sad to read this.

As I mentioned before, DRM is mandatory by the studios.
If "the player" you want to use does not have any DRM support then of course the videos will not work.

The BBC iplayer seems to have got it right for multiple platforms with DRM as much as I detest it.

Downloads available for Android is in the list.

Linux player support is not as it is just 1,5% of our traffic.

I see that BBC also dropped the VMP support and they made mandatory to use their own player to watch the movies.

I have been reading about this player but I cannot test it how it works as it does not work from Japan.

Is anyone NOT having lag/frame drop issues with R Player? I've tried on three separate PCs including a Mac and it seems there is always some degree of frame drop using the player. Are there some known hardware configs that have 0 issues in testing?

Also a question, ignore if too off-topic - What is the reason for DMM/R18 having exclusive "HD" versions of releases while studios continue to press DVDs for the same releases in Japan, but rarely ever physical Bluray?

I understand that DRM is not going away, it's just a shame that Microsoft's implementation is currently less than stellar. Encode quality leaves plenty to be desired. Aside from things like this, R18.com is excellent.

Most people who buy physical media are older and don't have BluRay players hence the reason mostly only DVDs are pressed.

As far as we know now. The issue with the DMM/R Player is due to incompatibility with Silverlight and some graphic cards. If you search for this you can see than Amazon and Netflix users had same issues before and it was due to silverlight and some graphic cards combinations. This two are streaming services so Netflix moved to HTML5 EME and Amazon offer Silverlight or Flash.

This is my computer configuration that I have no issues with the player:

Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D136)
MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015)
1.6 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB

There should not be any incompability in the first place if silverlight is properly made/swapped for something infinitely better -.-
