It's fair enough to say she was never top-rank. But there are many never-top-idols have a sizeable and long-time fanbase. Monthly and yearly ranking is only one measure you know. Aimi had long exclusive contracts with TeamZero, S1, SOD Star, and even a short spell with Moodyz Diva. TeamZero is no more, but back than it was a top (if small) studio. S1, SOD Star, Moodyz Diva are all prestigious labels. It's quite special to have all those in one idol's filmography.
I agree she did underachieve her full potentials. But in terms of number of big productions she had at least 90% of all JAV performers beat. So is it half-full or half-empty?
I love her despite, yes sometimes she's not making the best films possible, both in terms of acting and fucking. She never had a persona, what you see is herself. That's not saying she's never acting. She does act, e.g. in one S&M title, it was kinda a bit too hardcore for my taste, (I don't enjoy watching the female being hurt) but in the extras footage, she was completely casual and relaxed and humorous. That gave me a huge relief. No, I still don't enjoy hard r***/torture scenes, but knowing it's quite fake, just her acting, is quite nice, and made me a bigger fan of hers.
What I mean she doesn't have a persona, is that she's always herself. I already said she's very self-centered, and she kept that way from before her career to her retirement. She's flawed, and underachieved, and un-professional. She doesn't give a fuck about agency, studio, director, co-stars (females), studs and especially the fans.
She has a great big pair of tits, and no other useful skills (due to her own not giving a fuck about education and respectable job) she found ways to make money with her body and that's enough. No one ever said out explicitly, but from the interviews etc, I bet she was exchanging "benefits" for favors from as soon as her biological development (which was early middle school).
Before her, I could think of only Maria Ozawa who totally went against the strict traditions of Japanese celebs/performers, always nice, meek, polite and appropriate and pretending not to date/have boyfriends/husband. But Maria Ozawa went the high road and made herself into a piece of performance art. AY went the other direction, she completely exploits her body for money but unlike any trashy whore, she is willful and in-your-face and demanding.
After MO and AY, nowadays there are many more idols who choose the "authentic" persona, some of them are real, others are only pretending to be authentic (just like politics isn't it?) but give AY credit for boosting (if not inventing) this trend.
So yes if you watch her scenes as JAV scenes, I can understand some fans are not impressed. But I always get a huge erection, helped by her off-screen personality.
