so can you explain the elementary saftey hood? It doesn't look like it would protect much from say falling debres. Is it to protect from radiation...looks all most like it might do that (though gamma you really need lead and beta and alpha paper and clothes block most of it), or is it some strange we can't let strange (perverted?) Americans see us and take pictures of us kind of thing...

The safety hood is to protect their heads from smaller debris or unnecessary bumps. During an actual earthquake, the students will get under their desks (or nearby table), which would absorb most of the impact should any heavier objects fall near them. If you are out and not near a desk or table, you are advised to hold something semi-sturdy, such as a briefcase or bag, above your head (and not resting on your head), which will also help to absorb the impact of falling objects.

The safety hoods are usually designed to be used as seat cushions when there isn't an emergency. Some of the hoods are also designed to be used as temporary air filters in the event of a fire, in order to block out smoke as the children evacuate.

Ah so they put them on when there is an earthquake warning then. Wow...the amount of preparation that Japan does for these things is amazing, I would never have thought of half the things you listed in this post and I'm a chemist with some training in this area. Just makes the devastation even more amazing...if they hadn't been as prepared as they were the country might have fallen completely apart (which it still might of course given the nuclear situation, incredible)

It is VERY safe driving here in Japan. The level of skill here is enormous, however that said, people don't drive like painted-fucks because if they screw up, their license can be revoked. Big deal, some say, well it is a big deal when you MUST pay for a driving course which can cost upwards of 500,000 yen. $5,000 is a big amount of money to lose

The SkyTree area... erm... I don't really know. I can see it from my area (Taito-Ku) and it seems to be in or NEXT to Sumida-city, however not 100% sure.
