Do you mean getting out of a contract with a studio etc.? The first person that comes to my mind is Rion (as far as I remember, she has had three "stage names" so far). Maybe it's just because it would feel strange to retire (with any sense of closure, even without announcing) and then come back by the same name
Two other interesting cases personally for me are all connected to one of my favs, Kaho Shibuya:
- Before the Scanlovers site went down, there was a very informative thread there, and one of the points there was that Kaho, even though she now still uses this "stage name", has also changed her name at some point (which is interesting since she made a point of keeping this one, the one she got popular under; obviously, it's also not her real name, and that thread got into detail bout that as well, but I don't remember it that far)
- There is at least one other actress that so closely reminds me of Kaho that at first I thought they are the same person: Amamiya Ibuki; looking at some more photos made me quickly drop this "conspiracy theory", but on some covers, the likeness is striking (I guess it can be said about a lot of people, even celebrities in the west, e.g. Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman — with the right lighting, pose, makeup (and maybe hairstyle especially) etc. they do look almost the same)
And by the way, Ibuki is presented as Hinata here, which is not unusual in JAV of course, but one more point to why they change their names: I guess when they are only starting, a lot, if not the most of them think that it's just one time, and I guess a lot of them do only do JAV once. And in that case, maybe they just ask the studio to make up a name for them, a "throaway name". But if and when they come back, they have to choose something more permanent, and that "throaway name", like "Hinata-san" here, might not work

When I read this, I thought you're talking about this.
