I can't speak for the directors, but nowadays it's all about WHEN an AV star will do uncensored and not 'if'. It's possible they told you that to cover their skin as these titles are in a major gray area.

Yea, there's examples of asexual people in Japan, but the population isn't declining mainly because of that. People are having sex, but they're wrapping up and/or pulling out. It may come off as strange outside of JAV circles like this one, but those titles aren't super popular. Even in Japan, most people prefer attractive couples having sex. Go outside of that formula and you'll have a smaller audience. Releasing these titles without mosaic for 'western audiences' would obviously be better than releasing them with mosaic, but then their Japanese fans would get a hold of them easily.

R18 is DMM's creation. It's hosted and incorporated in Japan so mosaic obviously stays. Also it wouldn't be in SOD's interest to go off on an uncensored tangent and use the platform of their competitor.

Lastly, it's a money talks industry along with trust. They'd be in serious legal hot water if they started to release older titles without mosaic. They'd need permission from the actresses at the very least. Actresses and agencies know the value of an uncensored vagina and would blacklist a studio in a heartbeat if they knowingly released censored work uncensored.

I'm not a production guy so I can't say anything conclusive, but be it the lighting, the cameras used, or something else, the models often look 'washed out'. It's almost like they're going for the HDR method of packing in as much detail as possible when fans want to experience the fantasy which means smoothing out the picture.
