I don't recommend Pimax 4K. They are old tech. They only use 60 Hz, Quest 2 is 90 Hz. And it has judder. And without controllers, you need to use the player with your head, it is very awkward.

Thanks for your input. I figured that since I am not playing games, 60 Hz may be enough to prevent the motion-sickness or headaches, I can't imagine moving my head much while watching a movie.

I have a remote keyboard/mouse that I am using to control my HTPC while watching movies on the TV screen, I should be able to use that to control the simple VR movie player, right? (correct me if I am wrong)

The biggest problem now is to wait for the new GPUs to be back in stock, which may be a multi-year wait, I need to upgrade to a new Nvidia RTX 3000 series GPU, even though my current GT 1030 can output 4k resolution at 60 Hz, I still want to upgrade to a RTX 3060 or 3070 for better overall performance with VR.

I had considered Samsung OD+ but have decided to wait for its new "bug eye" HMD (patent approved in EU 2020), hopefully, Samsung would release that before Christmas. For the time being, I can get by with the Pimax 4k (I didn't have a HMD to begin with, so the Pimax should keep me satisfied enough before the new Samsung HMD hit the store shelves).

60 Hz is different with TV and VR. In VR anything less than 90 Hz is unconfortable. Some people can tolerate more o less than other. I have tried my Samsung Odyssey Plus at 60 Hz and it is very unconfortable for me.

You can control the Pimax 4K with a remote keyboard / mouse, the problem is that with the glasses, you don't see them... It you can control them blind... I suppose the glasses come with a remote control, maybe it is enough...

It they are cheap maybe you can use the Pimax as a temporal solution, but you must know you will not obtain the best image quality and confort.

Thanks so much again for your advice. Yes, the Pimax is kind of cheap (with tax and shipping came to just $150), and I can still resell it on eBay for maybe the same amount of money, so if the 60 Hz is unacceptable I can always buy a different HMD. The Samsung OD+ now costs a lot more than the new MSRP (doubled, or more than doubled the $399 MSRP) and its resolution is very low compared to all the other HMDs currently on the market, I don't know if I want to spend that much money on an used Samsung's very outdated HMD, maybe I would wait till the new Samsung HMD becomes available then buy the new Samsung HMD instead.

Regarding the controller, the Pimax specs stated that a Xbox 360 controller can be used as the controller, which leads me to believe that a simple remote mouse would also work as a simple controller for controlling the VR movie player interface.

You are wrong, the resolution of Samsung Odyssey Plus is good, 1440x1600 per eye. It is less that the Pimax 4K but it has a technology that hides the pixels, and 90 Hz. I am sure the video looks better and much more smooth than the Pimax 4K.

But yes, for 150$ you can try the Pimax and sell them if you don't like it. Tell us your experience with JAV VR... :)

Thank you for the clarification. I am waiting for the Pimax to be delivered by the USPS 1st class snail mail, the online tracking shows that the seller has shipped the item today and the scheduled delivery date is this Friday.

OK, I decided to take your words for it and purchased a Samsung Odyssey Plus off eBay today. Will compare the two headsets, then either keep one and resell another, or resell both, depends on whether or not I would enjoy either the VR headset(s) or VR JAV.

I think it may be a safe bet for me if I need to resell the Samsung Odyssey Plus in the current market situation, since it appears to be getting harder to spot a used Samsung Odyssey Plus headset that is both in excellent condition and reasonably priced on eBay. I did get it at a decent price, only $100 more than the Pimax, the seller described it as in excellent condition.

Awesome! You can compare and If you don't like it, you can sell the Odyssey Plus easily, they are in high demand for playing virtual reality games.

Do you know your IPD (the distance between your pupils)? It is important. There are apps to measure it, or you can go to an optician, normally the measure is free.

Pimax 4K have a fixed IPD (the distance between the lens of the glasses). If your IPD is diferent, you'll see the girls too big or to small. With Samsung Odyssey Plus you can adjust the IPD of the glasses to your IPD, literally you can move the lens. It is another advantage of Samsung. Measure your IPD, and adjust the IPD of the glasses (it is a wheel to move the lens) to adjust it with your IPD.

But even with adjusted IPD in some VR movies you will see the girls too big or too small, becauses they are filmed with a fixed IPD. So it is very important to use a player with zoom to adjust the size of the people.

DeoVR Video player is good and free. Skybox VR Video Player is good too, but it costs 15 dollars. My favorite is Whirligig, only costs 4 dollars and it has the best zoom and, more important, the only one with a Diameter option to resize the image without zooming. They are all on Steam.

Finally, the supersampling. If you use supersampling (more resolution than your screen) you will obtain more definition and more image quality. To adjust the supersampling, when you are watching a movie push a stick to open Steam VR menu, and in the Video section you will find the supersampling. Use 150, 200, 400%, all your graphic card can eat, you will see the diference.

My last advice: try new JAV VR movies always with at least 4K resolution. Old movies had less image quality.

I hope you enjoy JAV VR as much as I do. Good luck!

A bit late for the members who already purchased their equipment, but I will add my input.

I agree with the sentiment that VR is a completely mindblowing experience and it's difficult to go back to flat video afterwards, so it is highly recommended to go try VR somehow.

Where I disagree with the advice given so far is that I do recommend a phone-based headset, but make sure to get one with built-in headphones - it's really important for the immersion. Also IPD adjustment, if you can. The advantages of the phone-based headset are several:
  • Extremely low buy-in cost. Assuming you already have a reasonably modern smartphone, you can find something around $10-$15 which will be perfectly serviceable for this purpose if all you want to do is watch AV. For those who are uncertain about VR, it's a very low-risk investment that I guarantee will impress you. Plus, if you are still working on a potato PC, you don't need to upgrade your computer just to play the higher resolution stuff.
  • If you have a smartphone made within the last 3 years, the screen resolution when split in half is still pretty good and comparable to a 1st or 2nd generation PC headset.
  • Mobility. Use it lying in bed, on the couch, wherever. You don't need to be tethered to your PC, and you can match your body position to what's happening on the video.
Of course, using a phone has its disadvantages:
  • There is a bit more gyro and accelerometer drift with the phone, so you'll need to do the occasional reset view. It's easy if your headset has a button.
  • Limited storage. My home network connection isn't fast enough to stream the high-bitrate stuff, so on the phone I am limited to local storage on SD card for a few hundred GB of selection. On PC I can plug in a hard drive and have access to my full library.
Personally, I have both a phone headset and a Windows Mixed Reality headset. I use them both, and probably the phone headset more frequently. For the new viewer who has nothing, I absolutely recommend getting a phone-based headset first since it's cheap and easy. If you really like it, and want to do other stuff like driving sims (also awesome in VR with a wheel), then you can consider spending the money on a PC headset.

Whichever way you go, also be prepared to spend several hundred dollars on hard drives! You are going to download so much (more)...

I really liked the VR "bukkake" experience. This was a good AV:
I use a PS4 for my VR. I don't know how this compares to other VR platforms.

Thanks a lot for the rundown of the available VR headset hardware choices. I have been doing my own research for the last two days and have tentatively narrowed the choices down to Oculus Quest 2 and Pimax 4k:

  • Oculus Quest 2 is the latest generation in its product line, it has been reported that the display quality has been vastly improved over the Oculus Quest 1, the price is very competitive and it is available from Amazon for $299,99, it is also a complete VR system that includes controller, sensors etc. I believe that it also uses HDML cable alongside the USB data cable, so the image quality should not be any worse than the Oculus Rift, am I missing something here?
  • Pimax 4k can only be found from eBay, it is a headset only without a VR controller, it has a higher display resolution (claimed to be 4k) than Oculus Quest 2's, it has a lower GPU requirement, and the price is better than all other VR headsets (including used) you mentioned above, I am actually very interested in getting a Pimax 4k as opposed to other newer generation VR headsets on the market now, what would be your opinion on this linBay, but e of thinking?

I have VR since almost two years ago (PC VR, Samsung Odyssey Plus). I bought it to play games, and for six months I only played games, because I thought, "VR porn will be like standard porn, but with a big screen". What a mistake...

The first time I watched a VR porn... It was mindblowing!!! Since then, I haven't watched standard porn anymore. I don't need it, it is like to change from the old porn maganizes to video, you don't want to return to the magazines...

The mistake is to think that VR is the same, with a screen on your eyes. VR means real size and 3D. VR is immersion, you are in the same room with the girl. You see the girls in real size in front of you, it's not a TV or even worse, a tiny smartphone. And they are in 3D, so they are so real... You FEEL they are in front of you, and they are talking and kissing and making love with YOU.

It is breathtaking and a game-changer. As I say for a year I have only watched VR porn, standard porn is the past for me. I don't want yo watch porn on a tiny flat screen, and I don't want to see another men fucking girls. Now I AM fucking the girls. It is awesome and mindblowing.

But, this is important. If you try VR, don't use a smartphone. Their screens are not good for VR. Use real VR glasses: Oculus Go, Oculus Quest, PC VR glasses. With these screens you don't see the pixels. And use only 4K videos, even if the glasses are 2K. It is almost real-life resolution, you will feel the girls a few centimeters (inches) from you, guaranteed...

Quest 2 or Pico 4 offer good image quality for around $300 to $400. And they don't have cables and don't need a PC, they are standalone.

In PC VR you get a little more definition by being able to apply more supersampling, and there are glasses with more resolution, such as the HP Reverb G2, Pimax 5K, 8K, 12K... But you need a good PC and the glasses cost between $800 and $1,500.
