I disagree with the OP I think the girls are way hotter now not only that 100% want to do lesbian movies my fav genre. Out of top stars from the previous generation only a handful did lesbian. This is off topic I know but in America the LGBT population shot up and 90% of the increase comes from lesbian/bisexual women. I wonder if that is what happened in Japan too maybe this explains the declining birth rate. Women are discovering the joys of lesbian sex!

We always have to sort out a few factors when making such grandiose claim... dark age.... One factor is all of us (most of us) are nostalgic, we get old enough and remember the old stuffs as better than they really were. Because back then they were fresh, to our inexperienced eyes. Today even a very beautiful idol in a great vid may seem similar and repetitious to our jaded eyes.

A dark age is strong language, if you say we had a recession, yeah I agree we were in a JAV recession, no doubt. But I think we are actually getting out of it now. Since about mid or late summer, I have been seeing more JAV than I can watch (more than 2-3 a week). The massive wave of retirement slowed down, supply of hot new idols have returned, most of the genres that I care about are seeing regular release, government crackdowns have pretty much stopped. Scandals and bad news have also taking a break.

Blame the Tokyo Olympics. Lawmakers went after AV hard to clean up the country's image. Then, when actresses got the power to pull their titles from the shelves, labels lost a ton of money. Budgets went down all across the board.

All the negative press led to an already stigmatized industry becoming even less appealing to work in.

Don't expect things to get any better till post 2020.

When HD came along it showed up the flaws of the actresses a lot more. Only the high end productions kept looking so good because they could afford all the make up and lighting and decent directors/camera operators.

Then uncensored got popular and provided cheap competition. Piracy too. It became harder to sell 6000 yen JAV blurays when they were online for free, or you could just go look at porn for free on xvideos. So there was some cost cutting done too.

Maybe the older stuff wasn't all that great either, we just remember the good ones and forget all the hundreds of really bad releases inbetween.

Jav actress are still beautiful enough to me.

The problem is the story. Most jav today is just fucking, fucking and fucking. There's no excitement story like guys tie girl while they're resisting, whipping, torture, forced, etc.

The acting is also boring. Even in r*** theme, I don't feel any resistant at all.

I don't think it's a dark age, more like a silver age We have so many actresses, so many ways to access JAV ,VR and other technology, we have people subbing so much JAV each day when before we'd be lucky to ever get any. Girl quality is always personal taste, but with all the studios and new girls debuting each month, you'll find what you like,it's been a while since i've really liked anyone new but doesn't mean there isn't quality out there. I think we are on the cusp of hitting another golden era, once the Olympics pass, and the studios and girls are used to the new system of the JAV industry, with all the new tech and ways to access JAV I see a lot of good things coming along.

There is of course also the selection effect. With older titles, chances are that the better ones are still around/findable, and the mediocre ones have disappeared. With new releases, you see the whole spectrum.

Also, when I first got into jav, yeah sure some actresses appealed way more than others, for instance the aforementioned Maria Ozawa. But you can't hope for new girls to be increasingly pretty; so even the best looking new girls can only be as hot as some of the previous girls. If Maria Ozawa is your 10, don't be disappointed there are no 11's now.

Lastly, some of the top stars have had time to build up a body of work, and will have had better and worse days. When girls have a lot a releases, there are always a few where you go "wow she really looks at her best in this one", and a few that make you go "meh".

I like to just browse for debut productions sometime, man some of these girls are hot... And the nasty stuff they do

Once one is older and more experienced with women, one will be less picky.

I feel like it's those who are--for a lack of a better phrase--basement dwellers (virgins who masturbate mainly to adult video/hentai) build up very unrealistic standards to what is beauty and what isn't.
Even someone considered Goddess tier like Kirara Asuka will have her bad angles, her bad days, etc.
I don't think JAV stars have gotten uglier nor prettier. If anything, due to how much easier it is to appear in adult video be it major makers or one-man shops, the access to variety of body types has never been better. Truly something for everyone.
I can't agree more...
Once, you are out of the idol worshipping bubble & starts to love real physical women, it doesn't really matter after that!

Everything feels more professional. The makeup, the lighting, an increasing percentage of the AV stars have had work done and get more and more work done over time.

I think it has lost some of it's charm and yeah part of that is nostalgia but I don't think anyone can deny the mainstream stuff from JAV has become more sanitized and more of a bottom-line business pushing sales while it faces recession. They track and know what sells in terms of physical appearance, themes and I think that harms variety (for the main-stream stuff).

What happened to JAV? we have more high tech, but most of the jav actress are not pretty. Either they are moderate looking or plastic face and plastic boobs.

We have 1000p HD video, blueray, but the quality of JAV actress is drastically dropping. the sex act is good, gangbang is good, but when jav actress is ugly, i cant get excited.

Im talking about the gorgeous jav actress in the past like Ruri saijyo, azusa nagasawa, nanami endo, sayuki kanno, okasaki kasumi, rina oshima. even maria ozawa...

most pretty girl retired from jav too soon. Jav actress should stay longer because women from age 18-50 is still very fuckable...even late 50s for some pretty women...

JAV should put more money so more pretty girl will do gangbang for jav..i know japan has many beautiful girl...
it's a cycle

soon there will be some new beautiful women in jav

For me the return of heavier mosaic is a real turn off. Ten years ago the blurring became super thin which was great. Sadly AV companies have been forced to cover the naughty bits more heavily which I find to be unwatchable...

Not really worried about whether or not there is a lack of beauty, or a particular body type represented in JAV. As to the plots, or the acting ... frankly, the thing I look for is the performance. It is harder for an individual JAV actress to stand out in a scene where direction may be based on what angle or lighting works best with the equipment, set or lighting. Face it, 'flaws' become very apparent in Hi-Res. But then, some of those 'flaws' appeal to the audience ... of which the Japanese patrons are the target of JAV.

Thank God we don't all share your narrow-minded comment!! The vast majority here are enjoying JAV, with all the newcomers and existing beautiful actresses.

Not so surprisely, those girls don't stay long or aren't that popular. In the Top 100 on R18, only 20 had some work done (boobs, nose, ...).
