hey cgviewer,
thanks for info. the problem is i am very picky about my info.
posren_com just so happens to be where i got TFD-06 and i know about the "rental" release date there of "1990-01-01". the problem is that date in all likelihood is pre-dvd and that would have been during the hay-day of VHS. i can well imagine that there was a VHS version of TFD-06 released in 1990.
and since this was a japanese video maybe it was even released on laserdisc

http://www.pigeon.com/about/history/ ~ pigeon is a big conglomerate ~ been around a long time ~ just not "pigeon co ltd".
TFD-06 clearly has the "dvd" logo.
View attachment 1014454 the dvd standard didn't come around until 1995. so there is something wonky with the 1990 release date.
sorry to digress with the BS, but as luck would have it there is a font of information on the cover:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/レズフィスト-DVD-小泉ルイ/dp/B00005HT7H and that has the release date /
発売日 of 2000/11/01 ~ and that i will accept ~ that date might not be the only release date for the dvd but it is in the ballpark while "1990" is way outside it.

]if there is a bar code with UPC, UPC, giving a GTIN there is a good chance the infomation regarding a video is on amazon.com, amazon.co.jp, or whatever version you have in the country of your origin.
amazon is your free UPC code database. not every video can be found there and there are big gaps, but amazon is far better than having to resort to one of those proprietary databases with an optical scanner.
