Freedom of speech is fine, but...

Discussing something in the abstract is one thing; confessing to a crime is quite another. Rule 5 is here to stay.

Freedom of speech is fine, but...

You do raise some really valid points. Though we already have Rule 5: "Do not discuss or allude to real-life illegal activities" which covers everything you've specifically complained about. As for the "Moral Support and Debates" subforum, it was pretty much created so that the threads that -...

I just found it on 自作PC on 2chan a while ago. Kept it because it looks cute. No idea who did the picture. Incidentally, I just did a google search for the text in the picture (はーどでぃすくえらー ) and a lot of the hits were relating to akiba-online's downtime...

Searching JAV product code doesn't work?

The site-search has its drawbacks. Anything under four characters long is not indexed. RCT-174 counts as two 3 letter strings as the character '-' is not indexed at all. This is mainly for performance reasons. The site is extensively indexed by google though and their search is much more...

    Previous Downtime (again, again, again)

MySQL managed to drop some of our forums last night during a repair. The reasons are as yet unknown. It shouldn't be too hard to fix, the thread and post content isn't gone, just the identifiers, and we know exactly which tables were modified. Hopefully it'll be fixed by tonight.

    General Discussion boards gone?

It seems that yesterday when the mysql crashed, those forums were lost. Not the post/thread content mind you, just the identifiers. I do remember the table vb_forum went from 171 lines to 169, but I didn't notice anything missing. I guess I was wrong. I'll get back to you on this.

Sorry about the downtime yesterday/today Our backup HDD failed, and in replacing the drive, the data centre technicians managed to break our primary HDD. :donotwant: Luckily, as you can see, there was no data loss. Please let us know if you notice anything weird. Oh, and Merry Christmas!

    what do you listen to?

http://www.last.fm/user/Tiniest_Spark Pretty much sums my musical tastes up. My iPod refuses to scrobble (and I'm not installing iTunes) so it's not totally reflective. I guess I mostly listen to 90s stuff. The last 'new' album I enjoyed was Rammstein's latest effort.

    Noob question: What is Star-something...

You mean like STAR-195? That's just a video code. All JAV DVDs have them. You can usually tell the publisher from the beginning of the code. STAR is a code used by certain SOD-Create titles. All MIAD titles are by the studio "moodyz", all SOE titles are by "S1" and so on...

    504 GATEWAY TIME-OUT

That's an interesting issue that we've attempted to address in the past. We do have referrer blocking. As in, if your refer address is not *akiba-online.com* then you get a 403. What we don't block is null refer linking, which is when there is no refer address. This is the case when you link...

    504 GATEWAY TIME-OUT

The 504 message is spat out by our webserver software, which happens to be NGinx (as opposed to vBulletin, our forum software). I am unsure if the docs are editable, but I'd imagine it would be fairly trivial to modify the message. Hopefully the 504 won't be around for much longer anyway.

    PC specs for BDrip playback

If you're just using it for movies, you're looking to spend about $30 on one. That's if you need to upgrade at all. The 8400GS is around $35 and is overkill for everything besides gaming. 1280x1024 is great for 720p movies as they will playback with no scaling and your current hardware will be...

    Forum Rules and Regulations

That's not really the idea. The rules are all common sense. They are just written up so that we have something to point to when issuing warnings and infractions. The overwhelming majority of active members never break the rules, and most of them never read the rules either.

    Website Value $14.57 Million

Yea, it's not worth anywhere near that. Rollyco and typoman have it right. I put ads up in the first place to pay the ever-increasing server costs, akiba-online is not a business. Adult content doesn't pay very well at all, and ad networks tend not to run non-adult ads on sites with adult...

Dangerous pop-ups when cover is clicked

The server can cope. It's a fighter. Though I suspect people would just upload one image and use picture hosts for the same and other images. After all, many people upload torrents as well as use an external torrent host. Forcing people to attach images with scripts wouldn't really solve the...

Dangerous pop-ups when cover is clicked

It's an interesting point you raise. Part of the reason we do not allow cashlinks is because they force unecessary advertising down your throat (these sort of hostile ads are still ads). Though I suspect this is a temporary issue, as fapomatic are an old and well-known adult image host and...

I wonder...something like a toplist of users here?

    Usenet mirroring?

I can't really predict how interested people here will be in a usenet group, but I think it's pretty neat. I've added nzb files to the allowable attachment types for convenience - though compressing with zip/rar does shrink them considerably so I guess convenience is a matter of opinion.

Convert from mkv to simple avi

Mediacoder is pretty straightforward. At default settings with xvid 2-pass and avi you should be OK. Just check over the output file on your computer and see how it compares with the original (assuming you can play the original on your computer, I hope that wasn't the problem though).
