not sure why i get this all time 503 Service Unavailable (1371607114)

If you browse the site when you're not logged in, you're much more likely to experience 50x errors. The site prioritizes logged-in users. The errors are varnish request IDs. They are logged in volatile memory only.

Try loading one page at a time. Don't load a bunch of pages all at once.

    Red screen of death..

503 errors mean you are loading too many pages at the same time. There is a hard-coded limit of 5 concurrent connections. You are more likely to see this when the site is busy, because pages take longer to load. 502 errors mean the server is well and truly overloaded. I changed the error...

Your DVD probably has broken time maps. Process your titles with Vobblanker, using the default settings plus "Fix always VOB SYNCI/SRI pointers in Titles" checkmarked. For more convenience, I also suggest checkmarking "Use Input Folder." A backup folder will be created with the pre-processed...

    Malware prompt from Chrome

Thanks a lot for the report. Someone was hosting their signature images on img.o3e.org. I cleared out that user's signature and you shouldn't be seeing that warning anymore.

    Thanks button error?

That happens when the server is overloaded (usually at evening time in Japan.) Your thanks is not processed and it sends back a 503 error page, but vBulletin doesn't discard it. It's harmless, yet ugly.

Likes or Dislikes regarding Japanese Music

That's a pretty reactionary opinion. All music, even great works, are derivative in some way. Some of the best reggae I've heard is sung by a Japanese female. So what if it's a Jamaican musical style? Is she only allowed to pluck a shamisen? What a boring world it would be if musicians couldn't...

meguIV: The Official Akiba-Online DVD Encoder (v1.0.1.1)

I would recommend preprocessing your DVD with Vobblanker and/or PgcEdit. You can strip out cells and the resultant rip has perfect timecodes without having to do manual calculations. You can also merge and reorder chapters easily, if you happen to be dealing with an annoying multi-titleset DVD.

    Site upgrade to 1Gbit

Today's downtime brought to you by our upgrade to a 1 Gbit/s pipe at the datacenter. Also made some changes to the networking stack that should results in a more even distribution of page loading times.

That depends. "iloveyou1" is too easy to crack. "xoF$^JX63" is adequate. If your account is valuable in some way (you are staff, or you have enemies), 9 random characters are absolutely not enough.

Yes, the passwords are hashed using a md5(md5($pass).$uniquesalt) scheme. However, GPU bruteforcing can crack short passwords and easy-to-guess passwords rather quickly. An nVidia GTX250 can hash 140 million vBulletin passwords per second.

That's what I said: 100 mSv/year. I (mistakenly?) assumed the reader would make his/her own deductions from the data. I completely agree. The lead in that story was the slightly elevated radiation levels in Tokyo, with reference to average daily values. I didn't quote them since they are...

It's fine to be hopeful and trust the TEPCO staff, which I'm sure are doing everything they can. And you have to avoid panic, too. But yesterday they announced that the possibility of recriticality was "not zero", so... yeah. Any time you hear that on the news, it's going to scare people...
