Pears, apricots and squid on pita bread...a glossary of frequently mistranslated words in JAV titles

I assume "it's going to be cheap" means "I'm about to cum".

Just out of curiosity, how the hell did we get from "cumming" to "cheap" when translating Japanese to English?

(Sorry if this has already been discussed.)

A discussion on scanlover suggests this is not a Japanese or Chinese mistranslation but a korean one. 싼다 means cheap but apparently is also slang for cumming. So if you see this in a subtitle it may have been a translation from a Korean subtitle.

マン毛 is indeed slang for pubic hair on a woman. I guess it doesn't know this, being a slang word so it translates the first bit by sound マ being "ma" and ン being "n". 毛 means hair or fur so you get ma n hair.

Thanks, I cross-checked that and you are correct. Added to glossary.

Also added "man hair."

This is a personal request to satisfy my curiosity. I am wondering if certain JAV stars go by different names to the Japanese? Been reading reviews of titles on javlibrary written in Japanese, and the auto translator produces interesting results.

One of my favorite JAV actresses is Amami Tsubasa. According to javlibrary, that is the only name she has gone by. I noticed in one title that has auto translated subtitles that her character, a corporate boss, is referred to as "President Tianhai." I just assumed this was a fictional character name, but in the Japanese reviews of all her titles on javlibrary, the reviewers only ever refer to her as "Tianhaiyi." Checked the Japanese version of javlibrary and the name is 天海つばさ.

Yes, I also discovered that this name "Tianhai" does appear in some of her titles. Also "Tian Hai." At first I thought it was in place of "Tsubasa" because some titles say "Tianhai Amami" but then several titles contain this name and also "Amami Tsubasa" so it makes no sense to me.

And speaking of her titles, our next glossary problem is the word "wings." It appears in a ton of her titles. I thought it was like "pear apricot" for Anri Okita where it translates a character from her name. But then her full name also appears in most of these titles. And to make matters even stranger, "wings" also appears in several other titles with actresses with that name "Tsubasa" but then also in some titles with no one of that name. Examples of all are below.

HIGR-023 Spread Wings / Tsubasa Akimoto

HIGR-012b Angel Wings / Tsubasa Amaha (Blu-ray Disc)

IPZ-305 And Her Acme Make Me Come Make Me Come Pleasure Spiral Wings! Amami Tsubasa

BNMC-004 Rina Ass Hole Class Miyashita Wings Strap-on Dildo Female Teacher

Yes I considered that, but then what I don't understand is how the autotranslator knows to translate one tsubasa as "wings" and the other as "tsubasa."

Ah OK that makes sense. I was wondering if in Japanese they had something equivalent to capitalizing a word to signify a proper name.

下乳 "lower milk" in Google translate. This will give you hits for "underboob". Makes sense right?

妄想 "delusion" in Google translate. In my opinion the best rendering of this in a JAV context would be "fantasy".

More general, there's lots of titles where boobs are translated as milk.

Rori/Lori (ロリ) - "Loli", short for "Lolita", or a young, seductive-looking girl.

Just the usual issue with Japanese not having a way to differentiate between L and R sounds.

The word in question is [zetsurin] 絶倫, which probably has origins in Buddhism but essentially means 'insatiable'.
Both titles include compound verbs: ブチ込む [buchikomu] 'forcefully insert' and ブチ壊す [buchikowasu] 'break/wreck'. It's the [buchi] part that's coming out as butyrate, but it's got nothing to do with butyric acid. When the verb [butsu] ぶつ 'to hit, to strike' combines with another verb the [tsu] becomes [chi] because that's how the Japanese syllabary works. So butyrate will not have a specific translation on its own, because the [buchi] only appears when combined with other verbs, the translation of each of which will be separate. The autotranslator picks up on it incorrectly because it's in katakana, which is traditionally the characters used for foreign loan words.

JAVLibrary's name translator sucks. Similar to a name discussed earlier in this thread, 'Tianhai' is 'Amami' as though you were reading the characters in Chinese. 'Tian' is the 'Tian' from Tian-an-men Square (天安門). 'Hai' is the 'Hai' from the city Shanghai (上海). 天 + 海 = 天海.
Yes I considered that, but then what I don't understand is how the autotranslator knows to translate one tsubasa as "wings" and the other as "tsubasa."
The issue is that the autotranslator doesn't know when to translate one way or the other.

Underboob is some of the best boob.
Pretty weird how this word remains un-translated. Like @ding73ding said, it means 'specialization', usually in a medical sense. But in the JAV sense it will often mean 'fetish'. LOL-202 is "Loli Specialization". ODFR-013 is "Big Tits Specialization". ('Gil Weiss' is a pretty hilarious mistranslation of 'too obscene' [hiwai sugiru] when it's written in katakana.) WWW is "Rejuvenation by Delaying Orgasm Specialization"

This one's bound to come up eventually: Halo

In titles like SK-010, the characters 円光 [enkou] are mistranslated 'halo', as thus:
There is a form of amateur, often underage, transactional relationship which is euphemistically called Compensated Dating. The Japanese terms 援.助 [enjo] 'support' and 交.際 [kousai] 'relationship' are combined to make the word [enjo kousai] which, unfortunately for this glossary, is a sensitive word in most contexts due to the implication of child exploitation. Although the term itself is well known, every effort is made to hide it or abbreviate it in such a way that search engines can't red-flag it through a simple crawl.

When they look to abbreviate or disguise a term, Japanese language users will look for characters that are pronounced in the same way. So since 円 [en] 'Japanese currency yen; circle' and 光 [kou] 'light' are pronounced the same as 援 and 交 from the original term, 円光 [en-kou] is a recognizable abbreviation. It is doubly appropriate because the [en] part is also the character used with Japanese money, and these are after all paid encounters. 'Circle' plus 'Light' is mistranslated as 'Halo'.

To further obscure the term, 円 is occasionally replaced with the actual JPY yen symbol ¥. It can be used in place of 援/円, or even stand by itself to mean the whole term:

==================
Some corrections to the first post:
Bank (土手) the Japanese word refers to an embankment or berm. Best translated as a pubic mound, so a "man bank" is a man's pubic mound.
Not a man's pubic mound, but a woman's. "Man" is the [man] from [manko] 'pussy'.
Deriheru - An abbreviation of "delivery health", which in Japanese is a euphemism for call girl services. It's a prostitute who visits your home.
Services that visit your home are rare. Most often the girl is driven to an agreed-upon hotel with which the service has a relationship.
Irama - a shortened version of "irrumatio," a form of blowjob where the penis is thrust into the woman's mouth.
Not a correction, but a discovery: this word is occasionally misspelled in JAV titles as "imaratio" -- and this misspelled version is correctly translated as 'Deep Throat'.
UMD-10 Deepthroat Black Collection
ERS-012 Forced Deepthroat Acme Vol.1
143umd10pl.jpg h_968ers012pl.jpg

Mara - a black dick. It always appears in inter-racial titles, so it is a mistranslation of a word that means black dick. A "big black mara" is a BBC.
This is inaccurate. [mara] just means 'dick'. It has connotations of a 'big dick', but the term itself does not directly refer to either size or color.
Evidence: there are plenty of titles with マラ [mara] that lack Black people. It's also usually modified with a separate word meaning 'large', implying that [mara] alone does not necessarily refer to size.
h_086cherd58pl.jpg ebod374pl.jpg 433gun467pl.jpg
soe666pl.jpgkoiw011pl.jpg 17anb24pl.jpg

Notably, マラ [mara] is thought to be originally Sanskrit, coming from Hinduism cosmology by way Buddhism imported into Japan through China.
The story is that Māra was a demon sent to disturb the Buddha in his meditations. Since a celibate priest's penis is little more than a distraction, the demon's name Māra was first used by Buddhist priests to refer to a penis, and that usage spread from there.

NTR (netorare/寝取られ) - cheating on someone.
This is incomplete to the point of being nearly incorrect. The verb is specifically and intentionally in the passive voice: NTR is a genre about having your wife taken from you. NTR is the story of a cheating wife/girlfriend told from the husband/boyfriend's perspective.
Saffle (ハメ) - a sex friend, friend with benefits, booty call, or fuck buddy.
The part in parentheses should be セフレ, not ハメ.
Zubozubo (ズブズブ): jamming something inside. "Zubozubo" is onomatopoeia for "in out."
The part in parentheses should be ズボズボ not ズブズブ.

I recommend editing the first post using links to cite the posts in the thread where a term is discussed. You can click on the date of a post to get a direct link to it. For example this directly links you to @Electromog 's post, the second in the thread.

Pillow Sales

No, titles that include this do not feature Mr. Lindell. Rather, it's a literal translation of 枕営業 [makura eigyou]. [makura] means 'pillow', [eigyou] means 'sales', but could be better explained as 'that thing which is done by a salesman or saleswoman'. Someone who does [eigyou] is the kind of person who goes out and sells a product.

So where does porn fit in? (Where doesn't it?) A starlet looking for entertainment work may use sexual favors to get it: targets could be producers, directors, sponsors, or maybe even the managers and agents in her own company if she feels like they're not putting enough resources into her.

tldr: Pillow sales: trading sexual favors for work, usually in show business.

OK thanks. I've been away travelling for a month and have had little contact with JAV or this board. So I just caught up by adding/fixing as much as possible.

Someone else has edited the original post, however. So, for example, the correction of the definition of "bank" from a man's public mound to a woman's pubic mound was done some time before today, but not by me. I can only assume that anyone else capable of editing the post would have to be a mod.

I made appropriate changes here. But I should mention that I googled NTR and netorare and the first 3 definitions I found all excluded the gender specificity in your definition. I assume that it's one of those terms that technically has a gender neutral meaning, but obviously JAV reflects the fantasies of straight men, and that's almost always going to be the scenario you describe.

Correct: NTR is, in and of itself, gender neutral. A same-sex couple could experience NTR as much as anyone else could, and you're right to point it out. The core of the fantasy is the point of view, that of being cheated upon.

There probably exists a sub-genre of the fantasy where the person outside the couple is the same sex as the person doing the cheating, i.e. lesbian NTR.

Would anyone know what Japanese word gets translated to mosquito? I did a bit of digging and it seems that the sound is something like: "ka", and it gets recognised as character: "蚊". Any ideas?
