Thanks for sharing your workflow. I take it that you're happier with Mistral's translation than say llama or chatgpt? I haven't looked at Mistral at all so am keen to hear about your experience.

Yes, there is a very simple reason why I prefer to use Mistral AI over others and that is because it isn't moderated and allows me to use explicit language.

ChatGPT will most likely not answer you and if you circumvent the content moderation too often you risk your account getting banned. Same applies for the OpenAI GPT API. You are required to use the content moderation API for Input and Output and if you send to many requests via API that have not gone through the content moderation API your account will also get banned.

LLAMA doesn't have the ban issue but it has the annoying "I don't want to talk about explicit stuff" attitude. There are custom models of LLAMA that have this "patched" out but in the end MIstral AI is as good as the newest LLAMA model.

Generally I recommend using something like OpenRouter (https://openrouter.ai/) where you can use most LLMs on the market and switch between them.

In the end I have found that Mistral Large v2 is currently the best LLM on the market that has no problems with explicit content and it has a large context window over 100k tokens, that is more than suitable for subtitle translations.

My understanding is that there are legal/government concerns that have resulted in a switch away from blood incest and towards non-blood (and thus not real incest) in JAV.
It's obviously not set in stone, but does seem to be influencing/steering the content creators toward the milder form.
A similar thing happened in the US during the 80s. The original Taboo (starring the legendary Kay Parker with her pendulous rack and yummy, 70s era jungle muff as a mother who loved her son) and it's first few sequels were hugely popular. It falsely tried to form a causal link between certain themes /content in media and criminal behavior in real life.

I don't believe the actual laws changed all that dramatically, but the threat of the all-powerful/all-intrusive government coming down on them surely had a immediate dampening impact on what could be produced and sold.
The stories quickly lost their spicy appeal, and the producers switched to tamer/lamer media that emphasized visual stunts, like bigger, faker boobs...and visual flash over story became the norm.
However....as with any forbidden pleasure, killing SUPPLY only increases DEMAND. So, those of us who still wanted more flavorful content were forced to look elsewhere. I, personally, looked at countless Times Square area porn shops in the early 90s in search of the unHoly mother-son grail.....to no avail.

Thankfully, as computer/internet became more effective and readily available, JAV material with mother/son themes (like Rocket, Venus, OKSN, etc) started making their way into our homes via the dirty world wide web. We enjoyed almost two decades of stronger, more exciting product.

Now....the just as it did in the late 80s USA, the puritanical mind virus that makes assholes desire to sanitize and censor has landed in Japan. It's impacting us in real time.

Thankfully, many of us have TBs and TBs and TBs of older content to enjoy, should the production ever fully dry up.

And...not to worry. If JAV completely bans our fav themes, the smarter producers will simply move to a different country that is not yet infected by the fun killing mind virus.

Proof of that is in the history.
If you'd have told me in 1985 that I would one day LOVE porn produced in Japan, I'd have thought you were crazy.
Yet...here were are...and here I am...typing about that very love.
Please forgive this overly lengthy, surely boring post. I had some experiences this week that reminded me of the days when I had, literally, hundreds of the Greenleaf type physical paperbacks that I had purchased for $1 each...but could easily sell for 40 times that now, if I hadn't purged most of my collection in the mid-90s.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to give Mistral a try. As for the censorship goes, I had so far found RCommand+ on Cohere to be most lenient, but it is very unreliable for sentence alignment. In practise too difficult to use it reliably.

That's a bitch that I have never been able to master. From my understanding you have to use a program to chop out the video areas that contain the Sub, time stamp it, run those text images through a character recognition software, and then translate it to your desired language. Sam Kook may have detailed the process (I don't recall... maybe do a search on this site to see). Maybe it's easier to just use Whisper Colab, but either way it probably requires human editing to make a decent product. That's where the time suck happens!

I only helped a bit in it, not one of mine.

Chuckie explained it and there's software to automate most of it, but OCR can be tricky and will need manual verification for tricky letters like "I"(i) and "l"(L).

Being on a mac might make the softwares harder to find, I have no idea if they have mac versions for everything in the tutorial.

I need to add something I find a bit humorous. I realize that I'm answering a question that nobody asked, but I am just waking up.
I also had a big "life is short" wake up call this week, so screw it.
My nickname "Scully" was placed on me before the X-Files even existed.
However...IT IS based on a movie.
When I first started college, my wall was plastered with all manner of centerfolds from Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, etc.
I did this proudly and laughed at any girl who found offense.
